Making a clay ashtray in school

I made one and gave it to my dad. Even though he never smoked, he kept it on his dresser. At the end of the day, he'd put his loose change, wristwatch and keys in it. I don't know where the ashtray is now, but it did its job well all those years.

Yep. I did know but I think I shipped it off to the youngest sib. I put together a box of family keepsakes that I'd rather stay with family and not go to strangers or in the dump.

Wow, I thought our school was the only one that did this.

Our teacher always left a lump of clay on our desks, to that when we could keep busy in between classes. Some made good sculptures.

I still have my hand print one too. Ashtray was broken may years ago when we had those hard ceramic tiles all through the house.

I can't remember. Don't think so cause they would have saved it. They did save a bottle I painted at 3 or 4. They still have it.

Don't ever recall making an ashtray, but I'd make a creamer.

My Mother still has a collection of trays and do-dads us 6 kids made in school

I remember making an ashtray, and I still have the imprint of my hand. My mother saved it, and somehow it got into my sister's collection of memorabilia, probably because she is into archives and memorabilia when it comes to family.

But talk about making ashtrays for your parents. They needed them of course, but why do things to encourage it? "Here you go Mom and Dad. Smoke 'em up. I made it extra large so you don't have to empty it as often."

NO, we did not do this, but we did copper trays which lasted for years...

Yes, I still have a little clay Christmas tree my son made...I put it out every Christmas.

As soon as I saw the thread title "clay ashtray," a vivid mental image of the one I made popped up in my mind. Ugly, misshapen , kind of grayish- mauve, but it was glazed and fired Parents didn't smoke, so it probably held assorted nuts on the coffee table.

Or "pencil holders". Take a lump of clay, poke some pencils and pens in it, pull them out and let the clay dry. Paint and voila! a pencil holder. I can't tell you how many of THOSE I made.

I don't recall making clay ones in grade school, but I did make one for my mother in metal shop in high school. She used it for years.
