Did you made your own cut-off shorts from a pair of old jeans?

I don't think I ever did cutoffs, but I do remember deliberately bleaching and ripping holes in my jeans back in the 80s. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised when the trend started again when my daughters were in high school.

Yes, I did it too, making cutoffs out of older jeans. It was a common practice with my peer group.
But by around the time that I turned 30 years old or so, wearing cutoffs with those fraying threads hanging down
seemed to be a bit too casual or untidy or something.
Eventually I realized that was no longer choosing to wear them anymore. There might be a few pairs stored away in a closet or cupboard somewhere.
I still wear shorts in the summer months but they're properly hemmed and look more presentable than the cutoffs of my youth.

I still do that when I can. My jeans go thru a cycle, they start as casual wear, as they wear out I turn them into chore clothes, and if the knees get torn out I'll cut off the legs and use them as summer time chore shorts.
I did that with a lot of my son's clothes when he was growing faster than my budget could keep up. For example, I'd cut off his winter pajama pants to make summer pajama shorts, very similar to what you described.
