An Alabama Man has been pronounced innocent and freed from death row after 30 years incarceration...

This is a most horrendous miscarriage of justice, it would appear this man's only crime was to be so poor as to not be able to afford a decent lawyer at the time of his trial .

I know there are many people who are on death row who may be innocent and it's beyond appalling but I am whooping for joy..absolutely over the moon.. for this man simply because I always presumed rightly or wrongly that most states in the USA would not release a clearly innocent person after so many years due to the high propensity (and their right) to sue the state for unlawful imprisonment and mental anguish ... and so the state therefore would be less likely to admit to wrongful imprisonment leaving them open to a huge compensation payout .

I am happy to see this is not always the case and justice albeit turning slowly can and does prevail sometimes

I have to tell you I cried when I read this man's story..he's the same age as me and knowing how much he's lost in the last 30 years and lived a life of fear every single day is just something most of us could never begin to imagine.

Watch his reaction to being freed in this Video..

Beautiful, Holly, as a Canadian, capital punishment horrifies me at the best of times, but at least this innocent man has been spared the final miscarriage of justice. Once executed, oops sorry you were innocent after all, just doesn't cut it. Guilty until proven rich is a common phenomenon in many countries, I fear.

Shali...that's a phrase I've never heard before ''Guilty until proven rich'' what a truism that is, ...and although I realise it can work the opposite way with people who have the financial means to get them off serious charges of which they are guilty, the tragedy is that it works more often the other way around..

This is so true. You will not find anyone on death row that isn't poor or had a good (expensive) lawyer. One of the many reasons I'm opposed to the death penalty is the number of people just like him who were proven innocent after years.

So does it ever happen in the US that this guy would be able to sue the state for years of lost life? Or do they open the door, push him out with a buck for bus fare and wish him good luck? I think where a couple men were incarcerated for extended periods of time in Canada, they've sued the government and gotten a good chunk of money at least.

There have been many cases where a person is awarded a large amount of money for wrongful imprisonment - it's standard procedure here in the US. Canada is certainly not unique in that aspect.

Well that's good that those people are compensated although considering the horrors that imprisonment and the possibility of being killed, can be, how many would say it was worth it?

In the US these cases are far too common which is good and bad. Good that after decades some one is freed. Bad because after DECADES some one is freed.

A lot of these cases are prolonged by prosecutors and police more worried about their reputation than the actual case. Makes you wonder what they purposely did over the years to gain or maintain that reputation.

Im glad this guy got some justice BUT how does a guy sit in death row for 30 years?

This is something I've thought about too. I've been accused of things I didn't do and I can't even begin to imagine what someone in prison and on death row who is innocent experiences. And to never get those years back.
