Man to Be Hanged for Bringing Bundles of Pot Into Singapore

A man in Singapore is going to be hanged for bringing three bundles of cannabis into the country. Omar Yacob Bamadhaj, 41, lost an appeal Tuesday of a sentence handed down in February. In July 2018, Bamadhaj had hopped across the border from the tiny city-state into Malaysia to run errands and go to a mosque with his father.

I have been to Singapore and I can tell you that anyone entering the country knows VERY WELL the laws and the punishment for crime there. There are no secret or obscure infringements in Singapore so anyone disobeying their laws do so at their own risk.

It seems harsh but sometimes I think that we would be better off with clear laws/penalties that are strictly enforced.

It seems like we live in a society where everyone decides which laws they will obey and when they do get caught breaking the law they expect an automatic do over.

Tell it like it is, Auntie Bea! (y) The laws in Singapore are posted in bold print at every entry point to the country.

The Philippines is a close second. I watch Locked Up Abroad often and wonder how stupid those people trying to smuggle dope in to countries with prisons not fit for rodents. Most are young naïve thinking "only other people get caught."
I wonder too when I watch that show.

I have been there too, and as you say no one who goes there is ignorant of the law and consequences of breaking it. I don't agree with all of it, but it is done in an uncorrupt way. You break the law in Singapore you know the consequences and if caught you get them.
Philippines is a close second
Saudi Arabia is the close second
Been to those places also, and as to punishment they have similarities, harsh and often rapid. The big difference is both are highly corruptible and the law can be unevenly enforced.

Couldn't you at least have said something that I can disagree with? 😐

Yes! I too have been in Singapore 2 times. Oh, it is hot and it is humid and there are signs at the border, on the train and many other places telling you "Death if you bring in drugs." It is not Canada where we have Cannabis Stores on every street in the country. The government of Singapore does not believe in "wrist slapping" like the government of Canada does. Right or wrong, that is the law and you better follow it or else!

I knew a young couple [brother & sister] that thought they were going to make their fortune running drugs up from Mexico. They got caught ...... this was back in the early 90's . Mexican prison was not fun for either. As i recall he suffered the most. It cost their family a small fortune to get them released , and back home. As I recall they were down there locked up just shy of three years.

"Just send my mail to the Tijuana jail."

Exactly. "That's the law" and there are signs everywhere reminding you. This fellow is apparently a resident of either Singapore or Maylasia and there is no way in hell he didn't know the consequences of getting caught with drugs. Anyway, he claims that he was "high" at the time as if that might award him some sort of sympathy or leniency. Good luck with that defence!

If a person is going to visit another country, they need to know, and follow that nations laws. If they don't, they have no one but themselves to blame.
Well, I suppose so. I don't know how many visitors would know you could be in trouble for "J-walking" in the US but the crime of drugs in Singapore is known by anyone and everyone because it's posted any place and every place.

I know plenty of people who were hassled by Tijuana police for no reason whatsoever beyond a shakedown for some money. When I used to go there I stuck to busy tourist areas and left before dark. Probably won't go back again, sad to say. Mexican border towns can be very dangerous for those who don't know their way around, and even then...

I crossed the border into Mexico once while on a motorcycle trip. Nothing bad happened, but I never felt so uncomfortable in my life . Never went back.

Perhaps it was just me , my mind working against me ??
