The world just keeps getting crazier. This is yet another scary airplane situation among several over the past few weeks. The 33 year old broke off a metal spoon while in the bathroom and turned it into a weapon.
"A Massachusetts man aboard a cross-country United Airlines flight on Sunday tried to open the emergency door while the flight was in the air and then tried to stab a flight attendant in the neck, prosecutors said. Francisco Severo Torres, 33, was charged with one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and using a dangerous weapon, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts announced Monday."

I hate flying, rarely do and don't really have to. It's stressful enough to be up in the air in a large plane and hoping there is no bad turbulence and you have a safe landing.

These incidents/attacks on other travelers and stewardesses is appalling. I imagine what once was a nice career for these folks, and the pilots, has become a daredevil job these days.

These attackers are so angry, so unhinged, so violent, it horrific. I doubt I'll ever go on a plane again, it was around 2000 the last flight I took, no trouble with passengers or lunatics. But things are much different now, in the air and on land. :( Kudos to the passengers who put this character in check.

I've always disliked flying, and unless it's an emergency and time sensitive, I have no desire to fly anywhere these days. As much as I'd like to travel, I think I'll be content with a nice road trip in the future. 🚘

Sounds like he either did some drugs or was really drunk. The force it would take to open a jet door in flight is incredible

The cabin pressure is far too strong for anyone to open them. At a typical cruising altitude, up to eight pounds of pressure are pushing against every square inch of the interior fuselage. That's over 1,100 pounds against each square foot of the door.Aug 8, 2022

Crazy! How frightening for everyone.

In another article there was a mental health back in 2015 with this man. He tried to sue a hospital for 50 Billion dollars for a misdiagnosis and be allowed to carry any weapon or explosives he chose. It was thrown out.

It makes one wonder how someone like that survives in the world. It's highly unlikely that he's able to sustain viable employment considering his mental instability and hostility towards people. Perhaps that will be explained in the near future, but typically, these stories make the rounds and unless there's a high profile trial, that's the last you hear of the people involved. It's on to the next wacko.

If he or anyone tries to open the main cabin door during flight, he better have the strength of the Incredible Hulk. Once the cabin has been pressurized, it’s going to be almost impossible to open the door. The higher the plane flies the lower the pressure, so the inside pressure is higher than the outside pressure. It would be like you trying to push open a door in your home with six guys on the other side pushing against it.

It’s going to take ordinary people like the passengers and flight crew on this plane to find the heroism within themselves, and stand up to those like this individual who try to impose their twisted beliefs and perceptions on the rest of us…

I'm not understanding properly. The door on the airplane opens inward or has to be pulled toward the pressurized side to open?

OK, I confused you. airplane doors are opened by first unlatching the door by swinging the master handle. Then, the door is “slightly” pulled inward and then swung open the rest of the way it is only slightly opened inward, not completely. Take a look at this video —

@oldman Thank you. Seeing how the door fits to the plane explained it.
Sometimes we take it for granted that people understand certain parts of the procedure we are discussing. I had a girl about 12 getting off the plane and she asked what does it mean when the flight attendant said “The main door has been armed.” I told her that was a great question and she should look it up. She said “You sound like my dad.” I had to laugh.

And they wonder why I haven't flown anywhere since my last time in a plane in 97...

I find alternative transports 😁🚘🚄🚌

Yep, the good news is no one was hurt.

In my years of flying I had a couple of interesting experiences with emergency doors. I was on a flight that after we landed and taxied to the gate a man sitting by an exit door opened it and went out onto the wing and then jumped to the ground. He was quickly met by security people, don't know what happened to him.

Another time I was on a small commuter flight sitting by the exit door. When it landed the door fell open onto me, we were still moving pretty fast on the runway a lot of air blew into the cabin. The door was surprisingly light, it did not hurt me, just startling. The flight attendant put the door back and the pilot assured us it could not have happened in the air. They seemed anxious to get us off the plane and out of sight.
