Many seem to be disillusioned with July 4th these days

Maybe disillusion comes from comparing

U.S. Marshals and the Pentagon Riot of October 21, 1967
Description
U.S. Marshals at Pentagon - October 21, 1967
Saturday, 6:00 a.m. - U.S. Marshals Arrive at Pentagon: Throughout most of the day the Marshals relaxed. Many stored their nightsticks and small field packs along the Pentagon walls and lay in the grass, their heads pillowed on their white helmets.
Anti-Vietnam war protesters rallied to Washington on Saturday, October 21,1967, in the first national demonstration against the war. The Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam organized the protest to get national visibility for the anti-war movement. Nearby, military policemen stood at ten-foot intervals around the Pentagon. Within the circle of MP's, 300 U.S. Deputy Marshals spent the day waiting. The Deputies were on hand to make any necessary arrests, a civilian power not normally bestowed on the military. Hidden inside the Pentagon and other government buildings were five to six thousand Army troops armed with rifles and bayonets.

I feel fortunate that yesterday I saw happy families picnicking in the park, younger neighbors lighting approved fireworks & and overall sense of happiness.

Can I change the perception of others NO! I can read what they say & express my own opinion that for me America is still the greatest place to live.
IDK about America still being the greatest place to live. I have friends who are seriously thinking about retiring in Europe. Many more, not my friends but people I have read about, want to go to Mexico for retirement (which I think is crazy), and many others say they'd really like to try out Canada.

Me, I'll bet I'd be pretty chill in Denmark. I agree with their principles a lot.

Plus, most people say they love their countries. Americans are not unique in that.

They do, it's the automatic holiday when your local sports team wins a championship. Standard festivities include getting together with a few hundred other idiots, drinking yourself into a stuper, taking all the drugs you can get, then trashing and vandalizing all the buildings and businesses of the city you claim to love. Good times to be proud of.
But when I read of those after-sports riots, many cities have cameras and people do get arrested.

I want more cameras everywhere. I know. I'm just an old fuddy-duddy.

It was a (relatively) quiet night in my neighborhood. Just a few booms from the usual suspects.

We went to the fireworks downtown that they shoot off over the lake and there was a huge turnout.

What I don't understand is the sizeable amount of people who brought their dogs. WHO THE HECK BRINGS DOGS TO *FIREWORKS*????

There was a pretty significant dog fight right next to us between a pit bull whose owner let off his leash (WHO THE HECK WOULD LET A PITBULL OFF HIS LEASH IN A CROWD OF THOUSANDS????) and one of those large doodle dogs who was on a leash.

I thought the two owners were also going to duke it out, too. Several other people were shouting at both of them for bringing dogs.

Talk about animal cruelty..... just the crowd alone is hard on dogs, neverless the fireworks.

Maybe you haven't read the news of multiple millions crossing our boarders trying to get in. Must be a reason for them to do that.

I haven't read where multiple millions of Americans are trying to illegally enter other countries.

@Colleen's reply reminds me of the 23 year old idiot who lit fireworks in his mouth a few years ago. Well, you can imagine what happened. 🤢 .No one in my neighborhood set them off this year but there are big displays on the mountain and at big parks. They are far enough away that we only hear muffled booms. Luckily, our cat isn't bothered by the sounds. It also helps that I've been running the AC for most of the time since it's been so hot.

The best thing about July 4th was a day off when I was working and seeing the fireworks. For years my sister was telling me the beautiful fireworks displays she could see right from her porch. I couldn't understand how that could be because she was not that close to any of the major venues that put on fireworks displays. But one night after her cookout, we stayed and sure enough! I wish I had gone all those years before...best seat in the house! She no longer lives there though.

Once the revelers traded in firecrackers, cherry bombs, ashcans and blockbusters for 45's AK's & 12 gauge pumps I knew the times have changed for the worst. You know the police warn about this new form of celebration: What goes up will come down.

I HAVE heard this news and I am well aware of it. I was avoiding that topic to avoid more controversy.

FRANKLY, I think if more countries had such lax immigration laws as we do, more immigrants would try to get into other nations too. They would "settle" for other places, IMO. They settle for America because they are following friends and family here, because of what our TV shows and movies have said about the place (50% fibs those are), and because our legal system lets them.

Trust me - Canada is not so lax. Nor does Canada export so many TV shows and movies telling the world the facts of how nice it is to live there.

I really hate all illegal fireworks. Everything that flies up into the sky, or makes a boom so loud you can hear it 1/4 mile away, is not fun. It's just dangerous.

If you are near one or several of those loud BOOMS, can they permanently damage your hearing? I'll bet they can. That's just another injury they cause.

In days of yore, I think that most people put country before political party, whereas for some now it’s the opposite in a time of extreme partisanship. We never lost sight of the fact that we were all Americans. If your candidate lost, you just groaned, accepted it, and resolved to pull harder for your party’s candidate in the next election. Election results were never disputed, especially in the lack of evidence. Nowadays, some seem to feel that if a lie is repeated often enough, it somehow becomes truth. The notion of violence against the opposing party used to be unthinkable. Now for some, violence is just another tactic.

My mother used to routinely work elections at a polling place. It was a social opportunity for her, she made a little money, and even got a free lunch! The notion that she would receive threats and be accused of destroying or altering ballots never entered her mind. Today, polling place workers have encountered such things, and gun-toting “election watchers” have haunted polling places as an intimidation tactic. Thank goodness my state offers mail-in ballots!

This year, a planned family 4th of July celebration in my state capital was ruined and called off early when police detected and arrested several teenagers with guns. The city mayor was even trampled in a crowd surge, suffering a leg injury! I miss the innocent, safe, and unified July 4th celebrations of my youth in an age tainted with violence and madness…

America has had a dark past with many inexcusable tactics and practices, but I do try to keep in mind that it has always been a work in progress, however imperfect it is. One doesn't have to look very hard to find ways it could and should be better. Nevertheless, this experiment of a Democratic Republic at least makes attempts to be a free nation for the people and by the people.

Yes, there is greed, corruption, and crime, but I view that as more of a human condition that will exist wherever humans are, and the more freedom you give people, the more the negative side exists as well. All-in-all, I am still thankful for the sacrifices so many have made to assure that we can have some degree of freedom.

One fear that always haunts me is that if many take it for granted, or just don't care anymore, then what will happen to the nation we leave to our children. If apathy prevails, or we stop accepting the right of others to believe and vote differently than we do, then the civil unrest will consume us like a cancer. However flawed we are, if we can just find an inspirational leader with integrity, virtues, wisdom, and vision, perhaps there may be hope. IDK, maybe we're past that point, but I hope not.

For our government it is not even appropriate that the citizens show the German flag on our national holiday. Some years ago the former chancellor Merkel gave away the little German flag a political colleague gave her. The current government is even worse.

How we feel about it.

I missed @FastTrax too! Yay, you're back!
Hi all, back again. Stinky and I were trading guilt trips after Erin passed so it was decided that I come back to Shady Pines South. Couldn't find any of my e-mail addresses and it was hard contacting the site so I had to create a ghost account to contact Matrix. Thanks for welcoming me back guys and goils.

Luv U all.

I get it and I'm so disillusioned and so disgusted with our political arena, that I'm not even voting this time. The one candidate wants to be a dictator and the other one is past his expiration date. Don't even get me started on the Supreme Court!
I see it as a good man past his expiration date and a dictator wannabe approaching his expiration date.
