Maraschino Cherries

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = atrocious, 10 = ambrosia), how much do you like maraschino cherries?

I only ask because brought a bundt cake to church coffee fellowship and put a simple confection sugar glaze and placed maraschino cherries around the top for a nice presentation. When I went to retrieve my cake dish, it looked like most people picked the cherries off and left them on the plate. I was wondering if that was the general feeling - they are just for garnish. Do you eat them?

I loved them at one time. Just before the holiday season my Mom would begin to gather her ingredients for her baking. She always put maraschino cherries in her fruit cake. One year I found her stash and polished off 2 jars of the cherries. I was really sick after that but I didn't tell her what I had done.It didn't take her long to find out. I had pink fingers from the juice. To this day I don't eat them. If I have an ice cream sundae with the grand kids I let them have the cherries. I don't know why they didn't eat the cherries. Maybe they were afraid they might hit a pit.

The cake looks delicious, I love those cherries and would eat them straight out of the pot

I actually like the taste of maraschino cherries but I don’t always like eating them because they have Red Food Colouring which has been linked to various cancers and illnesses. Many people are more sensitivity be to food colourings than they realize.

Unfortunately candied cherries without the bright red don’t sell well.
As a society we are conditioned to associate bright colours with ripe and healthy.

In my opinion I wouldn’t take offence to anyone picking them off. It would be the equivalent of people picking the olives off of a pizza. Not everyone likes them.

The taste and smell of maraschino cherries takes me right back to childhood. My grandma always kept a small jar of them in the refrigerator for me and I could have one a couple times a day (the chemicals in them probably explains why I'm brain dead now.....LOL) Such a treat that was; my mother never bought them.

I still like them, but seldom ever eat them. I insist on one on top of my sundaes, though.

I like the smell and taste of them myself, but if I eat more than 5, they make my mouth sore. However there weren't that many on my cake. They are expensive, so I get mine at Dollar General when they have them in stock.

I like one in a Tom Collins!!

It's not the number of cherries in the Tom Collins that counts it's the number of Tom Collins!

Your cake looks very yummy Deb! I used to like maraschino cherries, but haven't really had any of them since I was a kid. My aunt used to visit us on special occasions and she sometimes brought us a rum cake from a very good bakery. It look very similar to your cake only darker and the bottom was moist with rum. My mother only let me have a very small piece. :D I probably would have eaten the cherry on my piece. Did you get any compliments on your bundt cake? From what I remember, I'd rate the cherries as a 5.

A few. Not many come to services in the summer and the only about half that do attend stay for the fellowship. Most that do stay gobble down a few items of food, then rush off. I guess on Sunday, people are anxious to get home. It's kind of at awkward time - the service ends around 11 am. Maybe people don't want to spoil their lunch appetites.

My own maraschino cherry story is as follows. One day, several years ago, my husband and I went to visit a friend of his. We were in his den, sitting at his little bar. Dave had a jar of the cherries sitting on the bar. I asked if I could have a couple. He and my husband looked at each other, and then Dave said, sure, go ahead. So, I took about three on a spoon, and at them at once. Almost choked. What they did NOT tell me is he had marinated them in vodka!!! Of course. I amused the boys to no end. Now, vodka is my drink of choice, mixed with lemonade. But I wish I was given a heads up. Of course, now I always have a little jar of the darn things in the fridge, with the "special" marinade. LOL

At one time (probably still do) the Raffles Hotel bar in Singapore not only made a excellent gin & tonic and Singapore Sling but they were also known for their brandy manhattans (brandy, bitters, vermouth and a maraschino cherry).......when I was passing through town and staying at the Raffles every once in awhile I'd order one and I always asked for extra cherries. :)

Reminds me of the Shirley Temple cocktails as a kid.
Ginger Ale, a little grenadine & a maraschino cherry.

My grandmother always liked to do things with flair, so we drank our 7-Up in stemmed cocktail glasses with a maraschino cherry in the bottom. We'd hold our little fingers out and clink the glasses together and say "TO YOUR HEALTH!" and then sip our "cocktails" daintily. It was so fun going to grandma's house.

Up to age 7, I thought maraschino cherries came from the tree like that
.....it might have been 17
Anyway, Mom had a half cheery on each of those short stemmed cups of homemade chocolate pudding, all lined up in the fridge

I always saved it til last

I only just recently discovered "real" maraschino cherries. Very rich and very expensive but oh my goodness, they are delicious. And you only need one or two to satisfy your tastebuds
