March 9 2025 - the Barbie doll turns 66

Was 9.5 and stopping playing with dolls when Barbie came out. No longer would want one, but appreciated her.

I was a Barbie fanatic! My mother crocheted me tons of Barbie clothes. I ended up selling most of them on eBay in my store. I still have Midge. She was Barbie's friend. Not a good photo but this is one of her. Such good memories of Barbie. I belonged to her fan club and got her magazine.

I was never much into playing with dolls. I wanted a chemistry set, which back in the 1960s was more of a boys thing. I did get a doll for Christmas in 1960 and I still have her. I remember my giving her a haircut.

I was into dolls. I still have about 6 of them. This doll I got for Christmas in 1956. She was bride doll with a trunk of clothes. This dress she is wearing is one my mother made for her. I always washed my dolls' hair but never cut it. Her name is "Oma Lisa" and I have no idea how I came up with that name at 4 years old.

That sounds a lot like my doll. She came in a cardboard box that looked like a suitcase with other clothes and accessories.

Yes, bride dolls were popular back then!

Barbie was the first doll that actually looked like a female. Her body didn't have the usual stuffed bag look.
BTW, I was appalled when my kid brother played with "dolls"- his G.I. Joe.

Me too. Did you have the pink carrying case and the camper van? I had the dream house with three levels and the pull string elevator.

I have two Barbies on my bed right now.

Us boys played with dolls too, but we treated them a little more roughly than our sisters did - - shot them with BB and pellet guns, blew them up with firecrackers, burned them at the stake, rolled them off the cliff in toy cars, and so on. Dad was amused, Mom was not.

Growing up with three brothers, the only time we ever saw Barbies was when we went to our lone female cousin's house.

They didn't have kung fu grip, frogman uniforms, machine guns. Their knees and arms didn't bend.

The clothes your mom made are far superior than anything that came along with a doll. I can understand how that could be more of an art.

Loved Barbie. However, I had many, many dolls as my dad was a manager of a store. Once when I was about 7 years old, I came home from school and there were about 7 dolls sitting at the head of the bed. I remember screaming in delight and hugging Dad an awful lot!!!

I still have Barbies from the eighties. The pink corvette, the carrying case, a poolside set, along with homemade beds with satin sheets and velvet comforters. Lots of clothes. I have a yellow and white crocheted dress @katlupe that I made. Same style as yours.
The ones that would have been thrown out because they were damaged etc. became zombie barbies for Halloween.

I sometimes think of passing them on to one of the little girls in the family but, they are all into the shiny new Barbie dolls so, I don't think a collection of old Sindy dolls would be that exciting.

I had all of that in Barbie form and agree about the outfits. Still want to do that with the Barbies I have.
