Marijuana use is rising sharply among seniors over 65, study says, and there are serious risks

The sweet scent of baking cookies wafting from grandma's house may be mixed with a more pungent aroma these days. The smell of marijuana.
The numbers of American seniors over age 65 who now smoke marijuana or use edibles increased two-fold between 2015 and 2018, according to research published Monday in JAMA.

I don't want to smoke anything but......I'd sure like to try some of those edibles . But my stupid state, {Ohio} @ this point is making us jump through hoops just to get a joint. Even for medicinal reasons.

Funny [not] that we do not need a state [specifically] licensed dispensary center for aspirin .

This state takes an ever stupider approach: medical marijuana is legal for some health conditions, but CBD products are not legal for any reasons- even CBD products that contain no THC are prohibited!!

This "legal marijuana" movement is gaining steam. Locally, I have noticed several small stores opening up in Missouri, where they are selling all sorts of variations of CBD concoctions. I even recently got a catalog from Swanson Vitamins....where I get my supplementals....selling dozens of varieties of these products. The way things are going here, I suspect it won't be long before this State joins places like Colorado, and makes marijuana pretty much available to anyone.

Didn't they have this same argument back in the 30's when Prohibition was repealed ? Some folks didn't like it (the repeal) and you've got the same nay-sayers again with MJ.

We've had and still have alcohol abusers and the same will happen with this new drug. Some folks will manage to play with it, to their detriment, and many will use it in moderation, enjoy it and/or benefit by it healthwise.

When it comes to drugs, "one size doesn't fit all".

Aspirin is not a mind-altering substance.
It doesn't change an individual's personality or behavior.
And nobody will cause a DUI accident or fatality by driving under the influence of aspirin.

True but......beer & wine do all those things, and yet they both can be purchased in the grocery store.

Don't smoke Marijuana & I am starting to cut back on coffee. The Canadian government is really pushing marijuana use on all Canadians. Making money from legal booze isn't enough today. Now we should all get stoned. Leave this country boy out.

There's a CBD Store Nashville, Perfect Plant Hemp Co and Nashville CBD Solutions all within a 5 mile radius of my house, and dozens and dozens more in the greater Nashville area. I don't think it will be long before MJ becomes legal here. 81% of voters are for making it legal here, and there are currently twin bills to allow medical cannabis in the Volunteer State — SB 486 and HB 637.

True- but the approach seems to be alcohol has been causing highway fatalities and other destruction for generations, "so let's give people an additional product to do these things!"

Copy/paste:
Research from the Colorado Department of Transportation shows a 151% increase in marijuana-related traffic fatalities, from 55 to 138, since the legalization of recreational marijuana. In the same period, 2013 through 2017, state traffic deaths as a whole rose by 35%.

Individuals I knew when I was a young adult and individuals I've known in recent years have had a number of characteristics in common; one noteworthy example is some weird kind of glee over "getting away with" something. If M. is legalized, it would no longer be "fun"- then what??

And to show how priorities have become totally screwed- early this month, flavored cartridges and pods for vaping were banned. ALL of them, not only those containing CBD. Many of those products did not even contain nicotine! And there's also the push to ban menthol cigarettes.
While I agree kids should be discouraged from using tobacco and vape products (although I've never seen a young person vaping), it's beyond idiotic to go to those extremes while at the same time legalizing another mind-altering substance.
