Mariko Aoki Bookstore Phenomenon

Chatting with a Therapist back in the 90's, I mentioned whenever I was in an art store, I felt a need to evacuate my bowels. The therapist said grocery stores did that to her, so I came up with my own theory:

That which we find pleasurable stimulates certain chemicals in the brain, for example, adrenalin, which stimulates, among other things, muscular action. The bowels are muscular in nature, moving food and fecal matter through the alimentary canal through a wave-like muscular action called peristalsis.

Hence, pleasure increases peristalsis which increases the need to poop.

Thanks @Davey Do

Everything you wrote makes sense! I had no idea we had a resident Poop-ologist on the forum! :)

I've never had the urge for defacation while being in a bookstore. The books are so interesting, that I even wouldn't have time going to the restroom. I hope that I'm normal nevertheless :ROFLMAO:.
I don't know if the theory that connects reading in the restroom with the urge to empty the bowels makes any sense, but obviously many people take books with them to this place. Already decades ago there were signs at the university libraries "It is not allowed taking books to the restroom!"
