Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 15th

Well, I'm not American, but I've always admired MLK. I used to have an MLK button that I clipped onto my purse. I was devastated when I lost it, and have been looking for another one. It said "I have a dream".
Pinky I hope you could find another one.

I admire MLK also. The things he could believe in and say with what was going on is remarkable.

I just used my search bar to google "I have a dream button"
and there were many for sale and not very expensive.
Even the vintage ones. I hope you find one.

Dr. King was definitely one of our most important historic Americans and he can never be forgotten.

I sure hope the country's school systems did what they used to do- making sure, since school would be closed, that the students knew exactly why this day ,and the memory of this man, is SO Important.

The local VA Chapel has had some very special presentations on this day, with Gospel Music from members of a church near by.

Always a full house, vets from the VAMC, as well as people from all over the county. And a rousing sermon!

Heather Cox Richardson’s thoughts for MLK day we’re encouraging for us living through a time when there are forces seeking to tear us apart as a nation and to flame distrust of and hate toward other races, religions sexual orientations and gender identies.

“ I came to believe that heroism is neither being perfect, nor doing something spectacular. In fact, it’s just the opposite: it’s regular, flawed human beings choosing to put others before themselves, even at great cost, even if no one will ever know, even as they realize the walls might be closing in around them.”

What bothers me so much about today's politics, amplified by social media, is that we are millions of miles from MLK's quote: "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

The way younger people use the word "Karen" as a pejorative online is evidence of that. In case you don't know, a "Karen" is a White female who complains about one thing or another. Her complaints can be insane and unreasonable, or they might even be minor. But, if she is White and complains on video, she is labeled a "Karen".

Unfortunately, or fortunately, even complaints, loud and whiny ones, are protected Free Speech.
From : Martin Luther King Jr.
Thomas Emerson said the First Amendment, as a personal right, not only protected speech and the press, but was essential to the development of self-value of the individual:
“Maintenance of a system of free expression is necessary
(1) as assuring individual self-fulfillment,
(2) as a means of attaining the truth,
(3) as a method of securing participation by the members of the society in social, including political, decision-making, and
(4) as maintaining the balance between stability and change in the society.”

To me, MLK Day is increasing becoming a day to remember how vital the right to speak freely is. Free speech is banned in China. People get sent away, disappeared, all the time by our #1 trading partner. Likewise, free speech is dangerous in many other nations. Journalists get murdered regularly for exercising their right to free speech outside of the U.S.

MLK used speech to change lives. No guns needed. Just a righteous, intelligent man tireless in speaking out.
