The couple gives a new interview Friday on 20/20.

I remember this case. For those who don’t, here’s the background:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Kay_Letourneau

on 1996 the 35 yr old married school teacher (with 4 children) had affair with her 12 yr old student Vili Fualaau. She was convicted of child rape, served a few months in jail, had his baby, was ordered not to ever have contact with him again, disobeyed the order, got pregnant again, was sent to prison for 7 yrs, and released in 2004. They are now married.

Weird. Mary Kay is a pedophile. She’s also strange….I saw a clip of the new interview and she still sounds like a waif/child. She’s trying to get removed from the sex offender registry.

:eeew:

I remember the story very well. It was so shocking and hard to understand because up until this
happened she had a good reputation as a teacher and a mother.
I wonder how her four children ever got through the whole episode as it was on the news for so long
and must have been very painful and confusing for them.

Does it seem that female teachers are being charged with having sex with male students more frequently now? Or was it always that way and the media is focusing on it more now? These female teachers are often attractive and could easily find adult partners. Why would they risk their career to have sex with an underage boy?

She was a very attractive woman and he was not at all good looking. I will never understand her mindset.

She could have a bit of a mental instability, even if she was a teacher. The situation seems very icky to me. Maybe both the woman and the kid were a bit nutty, IMO.

Women are more likely to fall in love with the heart of a man despite his appearance, than men are I think. Maybe thats why you can't understand, it goes against the male mindset.

Some folks call her strange, a paedophile.......Or maybe she's not strange or a paedophile (did she molest other children?) and they're just destined to be together and they recognized it even if our laws didn't?

The fact that they are still happily married says a lot doesn't it?

I watched the interview Mary Kay did with Barbara Walters back in 2004 after she got out of prison (before they got married). What I didn’t like was that she seemed to take no responsibility for letting things go too far. She said :Vili was very, very persistent”. Um, well, so he was persistent and she knew he had a huge crush on her. But a 34/35 yr old woman is supposed to be strong enough to back off from a 12/13 yr old kid – especially when she is his teacher.

From what I recall, she was in an unhappy marriage. Her husband discovered a love letter Mary was writing and he confronted he….and he told a relative – his cousin. The relative reported it to the police, and the fur hit the fan. She was arrested at the school.

Then, the jawdropper was after she served a few months in jai she was let out on parole and ordered not to have contact with Vili. She did anyway, knowing she risked going to prison for 7 ½ yrs. They were caught (doing “whatever”) in a car within a couple weeks. Judge then sent Mary Kay to prison for 7 ½ yrs (she was pregnant again), and Vili was not allowed to visit her.

So she allowed herself to have unprotected sex with this kid and get pregnant – twice.

Btw, they were paid $750,000 for a media wedding.

The way Mary Kay talks….the way she looks at Vili with googoo eyes…..<shudder>.

You should be happy for them that they love each other enough to weather all these storms. How many couples who meet and marry under 'normal' circumstances, don't last ten years? Yes it was weird and totally 'illegal' how they met, but apparently their love was stronger than the law. Why the 'hate' because of that from folks?

I've heard many suggestions that "they were meant for each other" but star crossed or not, she was the adult and made a sick decision, if I recall correctly she had children with her original husband and lost them. She is nasty in my opinion.

Debby, (if you are pertaining to me) please don't even think about telling me how I should feel. I've been doing my own thinking and feeling and forming my own opinions for a looooooog time and I've gotten to be quite good at it. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion, but you have no right to tell others how to think or who they should be happy for.

She was an adult and he was a child. I consider that child abuse. She was supposed to know better and abused her position of authority as an adult and as his teacher. Of course he was persistent, he was going thru puberty. No one hates. Debbie, would you still feel the same if it was a male teacher and a little girl?

There’s a movie “Notes on a Scandal” with Cate Blanchett and Judi Densch that reminded me of the Mary Kay Letourneau case. Cate Blanchett (married with 2 kids) has a sexual relationship with her 15 yr old student. There's a powerful scene where the boy's mother comes to teacher's house and attacks her physically - very understandable.
(No pregnancy but teacher is sent to prison.)

Debby, are you forgetting this woman was a schoolteacher entrusted with children one of which was this kid (12 years old)? My Gawd she should still be in prison, she is not just a pedaphile she is one who had children under her care. Rethink it Debby....

It goes against common sense and decency no matter the sex of the observer.

Watched the “20/20” interview tonight.

Again, when Barbara Walters asked her about having an intimate relation with a 13 yr old, Mary Kay stuck with her “I didn’t know that it was a crime, and I certainly didn’t know it was a felony” story.

 Come ON.

Their 2 girls are very pretty.

Not sure I understand your comment Jim. You first questioned MKL falling in love with an 'ugly' guy, I pointed out that women often fall for unattractive men because we/they are more likely to focus on the goodness or heart of a man than men are......and you come back with it's 'going against common sense and decency?

What exactly is indecent or wrong about loving someone for 'what's inside' rather than focusing on their appearance? And what does the sex of the observer (whomever that may be???) have to do with loving someone who isn't a visual '10'?

No Debby, I said she was attractive and he wasn't but he was NOT a "man" so all the comments you make about men in this context is a misnomer. Again your question about loving from the "inside" is moot when one considers AGAIN the fact that she was his schoolteacher and he a child student. Don't focus on attractiveness, focus on a pedophile case of someone intrusted with young children. Come on Debby, you must be kidding.

Sorry Jim, you said she was an attractive woman and he was not so it was you that brought up appearances and I was responding to that aspect of your comment and pointing out that sometimes women marry 5's even if they are a '8,9 or 10'. I wasn't suggesting in any way that Vilii was a man at that point in the relationship and was merely speaking in generalities.

And at this point, the 'proof is in the pudding' that it was not true pedophilia as she didn't molest other boys and as soon as she had paid her debt to societal laws, they got married and are still married and happily apparently. True love even if you don't understand it in their case. What's the age of consent in the US for him to have married without contravening any laws? Eighteen right, so their problem was that they met five years too early.

And don't get me wrong, I fully agree that we need laws like this because not every case is like this. Most aren't and boys and girls need protection. But after the fact, when we can see how wrong we were in judging her motives and intentions, maybe it's a good time to admit the 'mistake' in their case and accept that sometimes love happens in the most unusual pairings.

Ok..I guess I still am questioning your judgment after reading this in your reply, "the 'proof is in the pudding' that it was not true pedophilia as she didn't molest other boys". Debby, regardless of how it turned it WAS pedophilia. Legally and morally PERIOD!
