Self-defense weapons are banned in many countries including pepper-spray. Makes no sense to me but…

A mass murder/stabbing at an Australian mall today. The killer went through the mall stabbing anyone he could including a child. He was eventually shot dead by a police officer. Early reports have at least 5 killed. No word if a terror attack or a crazed psycho.

Hero cop fatally shoots knife-wielding maniac who killed at least 5, injured several including small child in popular Sydney mall

RIP deceased, hope the child survives as do others
Dispicable, and terribly sad. These sorts of events have happened in Canada, and have become common in the U.S. I don't know much about present-day Australia. When an event like this is not a terrorist massacre, are any typical motivations discovered to be behind them?

In cases where a mass violence event is not driven by terrorism, the motivations behind such acts are varied and complex. However, some common patterns have emerged from studying previous incidents:
  • Mental illness: A significant number of perpetrators have a history of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, or personality disorders.
  • Social isolation: Many perpetrators feel isolated, rejected, or marginalized by society, which can fuel resentment and anger.
  • Personal grievances: Some attackers may be motivated by specific personal grievances, such as a recent job loss, a failed relationship, or a perceived injustice.
  • Desire for attention or notoriety: In some cases, attackers may seek attention or infamy through their actions, especially in the age of social media.
  • Copycat behavior: Some attackers may be inspired by previous incidents of mass violence and seek to emulate them.
It's important to note that every case is unique, and there is no single profile that fits all perpetrators.

At this stage they are not giving out any explanations about motive other than to say it is not terrorism or ideology related.
