Massive Explosion Cripples Crimean Bridge

Happy Birthday Vlad...from the Ukranian people..

A crucial bridge linking Russia and Ukraine has exploded in a suspected attack by Ukrainian saboteurs this morning, just hours after Vladimir Putin's birthday.

Videos show the explosion rocking the Kerch Bridge linking the peninsula with the Russian mainland. The attack could cut supplies to Putin's forces as Ukraine makes more advances in the south towards Kherson.

A section of the bridge has collapsed into the sea and a train caught fire in the blast - at least three people were killed.

Long fuel lines are already forming in Crimea, despite Russian claims to have enough supplies to last two weeks.

Although Kyiv has not claimed responsibility for the attack, one Ukrainian official boasted that 'Putin should be happy. Not everyone gets such an expensive birthday present' - a reference to the Russian president's 70th birthday yesterday.

Russian security have claimed a truck bomb exploded on the road bridge, setting fire to seven oil tankers on the parallel railway line. It took four hours before the flames were brought under control.

The reports come despite the fact that the bride, opened by Vladimir Putin in 2018, was thought to have water-tight security and military protection by Russia - including military-trained dolphins.

Ukrainian officials said they would not confirm or deny any involvement in the blast until Ukraine's 'final victory'.

There have also been reports of another rail line to Crimea being cut in what some have claimed were co-ordinated strikes on Russian supply lines.

There were suggestions Putin may address the nation on the bridge explosion amid fears he will unleash havoc on Ukraine.

He has already hinted that he could use nuclear weapons in the war with Ukraine.

A senior Ukrainian official welcomed the news of the explosion, saying he hope it would help to drive Russia out of the country.

Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to President Zelensky, said on Twitter: 'Crimea, the bridge, the beginning.

'Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled.'

Russian law enforcement has identified Samir Yusupov, 25, from the Krasnodar region in Russia, as the alleged owner of the red-coloured International Prostar truck, which, according to investigators, exploded on the Crimean Bridge. They are still investigating who was driving the truck when it exploded.

The bridge opened by Vladimir Putin in 2018 was supposed to be protected by land, sea and air - including a high-tech truck scanner for detecting explosives.

However, images released show the truck suspected of causing the explosion being briefly searched by officials before being allowed on its way.

This whole thing kind of reminds me of Russia's experience in the "Winter War" with Finland. The found beating a determined foe on the foe's home ground a whole lot harder than expected. It showed Russia's military to be much weaker than expected. And may have given Hitler the confidence to invade Russia. Same think kind of happened again in Afghanistan. Russians don't seem to learn the lessons... Not that we are much better.

All of these wars lead to horrible loss of life and destruction for no good reason... sure wish this one would end.

Looks like the dolphins were smart enough to swim the other way.

Unlike our military folks dolphins always were expendable. Zero cost to the V.A. too.

Vladimir Putin has vowed a 'severe' response to attacks on Russia after firing dozens of missiles at Ukraine this morning, blowing up power networks and killing civilians in retaliation for the Crimean bridge blast at the weekend.

At least 83 rockets were fired, Ukraine's military said, with half shot down but half slamming into cities across the country. At least 11 people were killed and 60 wounded, Ukraine said, with eight of those deaths and 24 injuries in Kyiv alone. Rockets also hit the German consulate, but the building was empty.

A mixture of missiles and Iranian-made suicide drones were used to strike the cities of Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine, northern Kharkiv and Sumy, central Zhytomyr and Vinnytsia, and even far-western Ternopil and Lviv, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Some of these cities have not been hit in months.

Putin said he ordered strikes on 'military, communications, and energy infrastructure' after what he called 'terrorist' attacks by Ukraine - pointing to the Kerch Bridge attack but also accusing Kyiv of bombing one of its own nuclear plants, attacking gas pipes and assassinating officials and journalists.

Putin said: 'Kyiv's regime, with its actions, places itself in line with international terrorist organisations. Leaving such crimes without response is impossible. In case of continuing attacks we will respond in [a] harsh manner and in line with [the] level of threats to [the] Russian Federation. Nobody should have any doubt about this.'

Dmitry Medvedev, a staunch ally of Putin, called today's attacks the 'first episode'. Dictator Alexander Lukashenko announced Russian troops will deploy alongside his forces in Belarus, while accusing Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland of 'preparing attacks'. Belarus has acted as a staging post for Russia's invasion, but has not yet joined in.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the bridge attack and blames Russia for strikes on nuclear infrastructure and gas pipes. Zelensky said today's missile attacks had targeted power networks, water supplies, and civilians in an attempt to 'sow terror'.

KYIV: Cars burn on the streets of the Ukrainian capital this morning after multiple missiles struck the city - the first time in months that it has been hit as Putin exacts revenge for strikes on the Kerch Bridge

You knew retaliation was coming. Safe be the Crimea bridge was hit by or for the Ukraine. When things move toward a stalemate it will be tit for tat. Unfortunately now that the actual battlefield is tightening up more targets like the bridge or infrastructure will get priority.

This is what's called "poking the bear." It seems that the war may be escalating. With the recent attacks from Russia on Ukraine citizens after damaging the Kerch Bridge, Putin is sending a message that if he has to kill civilians to get Ukraine's attention, he will. Russia has some pretty badass aircraft that they haven't even taken out of the barn yet. I think it's time for some detente` like Russia and the U.S. had years back. Both sides need to step back and ask if this is what they really want.
