May I Have This Dance?

Oh, yeah, I can still dance. Back in high school, I went to a "Hop" every Friday and Saturday night. They were big in my area. I am 6'4" and when I did my first split, I thought my pants were going to also split. We always had so much fun at the Hops. The girls used to take their shoes off a lot of the times. I never figured out the reason behind that. I enjoyed the dancing to the slow songs, but the fast songs were my favorite. We did a dance called the Lindy Hop, much like you saw on American Bandstand. Of course, there was also the Madison, the Twist, the Stroll, the Mashed Potatoes, the Bristol Stomp and then some goofy dances like the Fly, the Pony, etc. that never made much sense, so I used that time for a bathroom break or to go get a Coke.

About 15 years ago, my wife wanted me to go take Salsa lessons with here. That did not happen. By that time, I was kind of mellowing out. I did take Rumba lessons, but how many Rumba songs get played anywhere today?

...and this is for oldman. You must have had so much fun doing the Lindyhop!!

Yes, I can dance, but I wouldn't even attempt to be a contestant on the reality show'So You Think You Can Dance'.LOL! I know I wouldn't get far in the prelimary rounds
When my siblings and I were in young teen age yrs, every Fri night we would go to a local club to learn how to dance e.g. fox trot, waltz, cha cha etc Every year around Xmas, there was an annual ball we would go to with our friends. We could show off our dancing skills in front of our parents,it was fun.
In later yrs,I learned how to do the hustle, line dances.whenever I hear a 'disco'song on the radio,I'll get up start dancing. One way to get a bit of exercise Sue

Cool! But, I wasn't quite that professional. Their timing in the video is spot on. I was hoping someone would tell me why the girls took their shoes off at the Hops. I always wanted to ask, but was kind of nervous to hear the answer.

"Come, let's stroll
Stroll across the floor..."

The Stroll is very E-Z to learn. Two cross-over steps to the left, then two cross-over steps to the right and move up the line on the second two. The Stroll:

It was an E-Z dance to do once you get into the rhythm. Most of the kids had a problem doing the Madison. Maybe it's also on YouTube. Also the Mashed Potatoes and the Bristol Stomp seemed to be problematic for some.

In our school, the dances were always held in the gym and it was believed that the hard soled shoes would damage the shiny hardwood floors so we had sock hops!

By the time I came along, we had a new building and the dances moved to the cafeteria which had terrazzo floors and the shoes stayed on.
