When I was quite a young guy, living a little ignorant of quite a bit of pop culture, I'd heard of Star Wars but hadn't seen it yet. Through some people I knew, I got a second-hand invitation to a Christmas party being thrown by a middle-aged man name Joe Gaeilke and his wife. Their home was on the wooded edge of Kootenay Lake. Joe was an electrician by trade.
Turned out that when my girlfriend and I arrived and the front door opened, we could see and hear a lot of people, mostly in their 20s & 30s, and with quite a few young children there too. Before we got our coats and caps off, Joe had come over to welcome us. Then he said quietly, "George Lucas is here. His company produced 'Star Wars'." Well, the movie title was familiar to me, and probably quite a few of the other guests had seen that first Star Wars movie. But not my girlfriend or me.
George Lucas was already in a corner of the living room, sitting in an easy chair with a cup of Christmas cheer in his hand. Nobody wanted to interrupt his relaxation, though people often glanced his way. George sat quietly through the evening. But his girlfriend of the time sat on the floor near his chair. Maybe an hour after we arrived, she gathered the kids into a close semi-circle around her, and started telling them stories. She had the kids enthralled and giggling sometimes, and George gazed on the little scene with obvious delight, but never saying anything. So the grown up guests would often be listening now and then to the stories too.
I learned that the situation was that Lucas had bought a small acreage with a cabin on it as a hide-away, far from the demands and bustle of Hollywood business down n California. Our host, Joe Genelke, had been hired to do some electrical work on Geore's place. He and George had become friendly, so Joe had invited George and his girlfriend to this party. George obviously didn't want to be fawned over or peppered with questions. I can't say I got to know George Lucas... or even spoke to him one-on-one. But that evening is a pleasant memory for me. And I did eventually see that first Star Wars movie.
