Meaning of Life - Joseph Campbell - The Origin of Myth Guy

Joseph Campbell was a guest speaker in one of my Philosophy classes in college and I was absolutely in awe of this man. He closes with "follow your bliss." I never forgot it and did just that.
What an honor. I would have loved to have met him. I only learned about him after he was gone.

Meaning of life, my Thought.

[There is a Beginning & an End. The middle part is ever changing.]

I think this part of Joseph Campbell's quote

"and you must decide what you want your own to be."

has no time frame for decision making & doesn't account for the changes during one's lifetime.

At 80 now. Looking back over the 70 years I could make choices. I can't think of one time I decided what my life would be.

Interesting. I was always deciding and readjusting. I'm nine years your junior.

Maybe I am one of the fortunate ones. I did decide what my life was going to be when I got sick and tired of going nowhere. Once I made that decision, opportunities for improvement seemed to present themselves and I took advantage of them as they came along. Early on, it was the opportunity to go back to school and ready myself for a decent career. This involved finding a good fit for a major and then deciding to work while going to school so I didn't graduate in debt (this was well before tuition became so high as it is today). I worked a full time job during the day and went to school at night for years. It was well worth it. Then, it was going after that career, while constantly improving my skills so as to stay relevant in the market until retirement.

Of all of the choices I was presented with, the two best were getting married and then going back to college to finish my formal education. My wife made the choice of buying our condo, and I think in hindsight that it was an excellent choice for our lifestyle. So now we are comfortably retired.

That was the only time I ever saw him in person. I did see him on Bill Moyers show on PBS a couple of times many years later and he was retired by then. What an inspiration he was and believe me, I really did begin to delve into serious thought after his one lecture.

Cool. My husband and I are following our bliss. We didn't know that's what it was called until we heard Joe talk about it.

It's really neat you did that. It's cool you had the insights.

I listened back then to tapes and these days to MP3s of people with non-religious positive messages. It is from these that I stay positive and do the right things. I think we generally find that when we get on a right path, there is usually somebody influencing us. So I can take credit for taking action, but not for the ideas themselves. An idea isn't worth anything unless it results in taking action. In my case, Brian Tracy, Jim Rohn, Earl Nightingale, and more recently, Shad Helmstetter, are among these.

There are folks who feel these ideas are not worth the effort or that these people don't have anything to offer. I have found that coming from a severely dysfunctional family, such speakers really help to overcome the training I got while growing up. Rather than blaming my parents, I realize that they must have been brought up this way and are just doing what they know. They were good parents in that they raised a family of 10 kids and we never went without food or a home. It was the psychological aspect that was really problematic. There are many households with similar situations, so it is not at all uncommon and I doubt I had it worse than others. What I did do was look for a solution to get my life going, and I did. Not everyone among my siblings did that, but those who did, have fared very well.

I did the same thing relative to the bad things that happened to me. Periodically along the way I found someone through their books, their friendship etc. who was wise. I applied the things that inspired me and overcame the old dysfunctional ways.

Sometimes we can be pleasantly surprise at how just the right words at just the right can have life changing effects.
