Meaning of March.

As March brought the first day of spring with the vernal equinox, it was the start of new beginnings. March became the third month when January and February, which were added to the end of the Roman calendar around 700 BCE, instead became the first and second months around 450 BCE.
Look guys, stick with me. Me and Wikipedia are quite up to date with this stuff...

Where I grew up, in the great Hoosier state, March traditionally brought the most bizarre weather of the entire year. It could be warm and lovely and two days later, there could be three feet of snow. Throw in a tornado or two and you had March at its Marchiest.

The high school basketball regional, sectional and state finals were always held in March. You could count pretty dependably that there would be a terrible snowstorm for the most important game. The year that my high school basketball team almost made it all the way, I had the privilege of spending the night in the fieldhouse with several thousand of my new friends, sleeping on the bleachers because there was no way in h-e-double-hockeysticks anybody was going to make it home THAT night. It was really fun! As we all know, high school basketball is a religion in Indiana and nobody is going to miss the big games because of a little snow....or a LOT of snow......or the storm of the century.

My best friend planned her wedding for the night of the state finals. I thought she was crazy, knowing that it sure-as-hell was gonna snow. And snow it did.....and snow....and snow. I ended up walking 3/4 of a mile to the church in the snow, with my bridesmaid dress swathed in plastic thrown over my shoulder. I made it, the bride and groom made it, the cake made it, but the flowers were MIA, as well as the best man and the groom's parents, all of which/whom were stuck on highways somewhere. That's what you get for having a wedding in March, especially on the night of the state basketball finals. She's still married.....56 years later.

The view from our former front yard when March went out like a pissed off polar bear.

Or, with some symbology for those of us who like to ride, like a knife through a bottle of Caesar salad dressing. Report me as being suspicious of any lambs coming our way.

The "meaning of March" in our area is the ability to live with a roller coaster of changing weather....it is usually the "transition" month between running the furnace, or opening the Windows....and can change almost daily.
