Media and charity donations

A local radio station (one I no longer listen to) used to solicit donations around Christmas. What got me is when radio host said, "Part of the proceeds will go the Make a Wish Foundation." My questions were: 1 )What percentage? and 2) Who gets the money that's not turned over to the charity?

I never donate money to a company who claims they will donate it. One, there's no accounting for how much was donated, let alone made it to the charity and second, I'm not giving a company a tax break.

It still amazes me when I see people raising money for some cause or other, standing there with a card machine and people actually getting out their bank or credit card to donate!

I have known people who donated to those appeals you see on some tv channels and, inevitably, they then get phone calls and letters from numerous charities asking for donations. At least one friend of mine was being pestered by a company wanting her to leave them a donation in her Will!
