medication side effects

My husband has an enlarged prostate & has been on 3 different kinds of med to help him with bladder emptying. All the meds are alpha blockers which cause his blood pressure to drop very low, also cause dizziness. Would you take medications that don't actually cure anything but made you sicker. He thinks he has to do what the dr's tell him. I try not to say anything but it's hard to watch a once energetic man become an invalid. I would just like some other opinions please. Thanks.

Same problem here (as with most men over 60). After an ER visit that included a catheter, my doctor put me on 2 meds. I don't know if they are Alpha Blockers, but they do work without much in the way of side effects (except more hair on head; they're prescribed for baldness, too):
1. Flomax (1 before bed)
2. Dutasteride (1 per day)
A friend of mine is also taking them; he's 87.
I suggest you ask your husband' doctor about these. I've been taking them for the past 2 years. Abdominal Ultrasound at last visit showed no further prostate enlargement. At least I can sleep 6-7 hours/night.

ETA: Sometimes a doctor will only prescribe what his insurer covers & won't mention other medications that may be safer.
If your husband's doctor doesn't want to prescribe one of the two, ask him why & don't accept an answer that doesn't make sense.

If he doesn't take them, he may be up all night and not get any sleep. This is a situation where you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. He may be able to work his way down to a minimal dosage which will get him to an optimal point. A friend of mine had that operation where they reamed his prostrate and made it smaller. He is satisfied with the results, but was in misery for quite awhile after they did it.

I take 1 Flomax before bed and it works for me, but I do experience some dizziness from time to time. Getting old is not for sissies.

I just saw a piece on a new procedure non-evasive using what I think was ultrasound don't hold me to that. It opens the pathway to allow full flow. l live in Texas so I'll assume it was in Texas. Ask you doctors about it. Sorry I don't recall more.
I think you're referring to a relatively new procedure called "Urolift."
It is invasive - it involves moving the sides of the prostate & fastening staples to hold each side from the tube that carries urine out, allowing unrestricted flow. Not for everyone; there have been complications.

Personally I'd look for noninvasive natural remedies that have been used for thousands of years, and
which were primarily used in this country too before John D. Rockefeller took over the AMA and the media. <--
All his drug medications made from petrochemical products are poison - and are not intended to help people get well.
Now that the internet is being censored and past histories deleted, this information is not as prominent but it still is available.
Non-invasive = not tending to infiltrate and destroy healthy tissue.

I'm 75 and have been taking Flomax for approx a year with no side effects. Older brother has been taking it for approx 9 years with no side effects. Your hubby needs to talk with his doctor.

Thanks everyone! He has tried every medication you've mentioned & is now trying another one but is having the same side effect. He's been told about the Urolift which his friend has had but isn't happy with. I'm not having any luck convincing him to try natural products yet.
Thanks again for your help.

If nothing works without causing a serious problem, ask his doctor about the TURP procedure. My doc said "If the medicine stops working, that's what we'll do." It's a Go-home-on-the-same-day procedure.

I think that he has been prescribed too many, I took Flomax
on its own for 15 years and had no problems with side effects.

"Prostate Arterial Embolisation", was the procedure that I had
done in 2017 and have had no problems since.

Mike.

I have taken Flomax for more years than I can remember. One at breakfast and one at supper time. So far, everything is working as it should, but slower. Takes much longer to empty bladder. I drink a lot of cranberry juice…the real stuff, not the sweetened version.
