Members in Texas & Other Weather-effected areas, This Week

I am concerned about the reports of the extreme frigid temps
which are not usual for Texas, and surrounding States, so they do not have adequate back-up systems,
and the other nearby related weather extremes, this week,
that are also causing widespread power outages, leaving large areas of people without heat, and other basics, including water in some areas.

This is, of course, even more difficult and dangerous, for people who are older and living alone, with health limitations, etc.

If you are an SF member who lives in those areas, Let us know you are okay, If/when, you are able to.

Many of us are thinking of you!

I was just wondering if the sale of wood burning stoves will go up in these affected areas. Of course, that would mean more precious trees being cut down. 😞 Even a gas fireplace would be something to fall back on when electricity or a furnace goes out.

Most gas fireplaces need electric to start the gas burning, you need electric for pellet furnaces as well, I think. Wood burning stoves are just plain dangerous IMO. I think people need to buy more blankets. The power used to go out so often in winter, where we lived, we bought sleeping bags so we didn’t freeze.

A lot of the firewood a person would cut for a wood burning stove would come from fallen, dead, or diseased trees. Unless they were your own trees. I think.

Daughter and family live in El Paso which is on a different power grid so they are fine.

Wood-burning stoves are considered contributors to air pollution. Owning a generator is a good idea. Prices on generators usually go up quite a bit at times when they're in particular demend.

Frozen in down in Mississippi. Thankfully, we've had sleet and snow instead of the freezing rain that was predicted so the power is still on. My parents and I both have propane stoves but I'm staying with them this week. Just made sense to cut my water off at the outside and not try to heat both places since we initially thought we'd have an extended power outage. Freezing rain is in the forecast again for this evening through tomorrow morning so we're not in the clear yet!

For backup we have a gas generator to periodically power fridges and freezers and two fully charged Goal Zero solar power stations for cooking, mom's CPAP etc.

Stay warm @AnnieA !

Have had power all day and hoping it stays that way. Water is back on as one of the Board members live here and he got the plumbers here ASAP. So I am still okay. No rolling black outs now. They are saying if you don't have power its not because of them. Hoping the next few days stay the same.

Glad you are doing okay Terry. I have power also, and no water issues up on the NW side of Houston.
Those so-called rolling black outs are a joke. When people lose power, it seems to be for 2 or 3 days at a time, not hours.

Oh dear! We were finally affected by the winter storm; our electrical power went out around 11 p.m. last night. By 3:30 a.m. it was back on. I woke up and was suffocating because the central heat was on. We also woke up to a bright lit room. Hubby had left the light switch up. But, we were so happy to get out from under those 8 blankets. lol We never did get cold though. Thank God.

I'm surprised you are skating through this mess. It's crazy in the Champions area.

Update: My power went off for 2 hours. Just came back on about 30 minutes ago. Our whole complex was out. Water was off also. Everything back to normal now. Praying it stays this way!
I am hearing all water and power issues will be cleared on Friday but I will not hold my breathe. Next week we are back in the 70s😍

Our gas logs only need a match to start burning; nothing electric at all.
