Merriam is one of those compulsive people, who way over frets the details. This is the true story of her wedding day. First, she and her boy friend have been living together for well over a year, before they decided to get married a year later. Merriam settled on the Baltimore Hotel for the reception. she agonized on the font of the invitations, etc.., etc. But finally, she sent them out.
That day, on the TV news, they were taking down the "Baltimore Hotel" sign, the hotel had been sold to the Big Chain Hotels. ( I don't remember what hotel chain actually bought the hotel.) No more Baltimore Hotel. So she had to send out corrected invitations. The first thing to go wrong on her wedding day was that she burnt herself with a curling iron. The limo whisked her up to the church, but there was a problem. 92 year old Uncle Giuseppe had died, and his three older sisters were somehow left in the church after the funeral. They were draped totally in black, loudly praying the rosary, and wailing away.
The spoke no English, only Italian. The limo had to come back from the cemetery to get them. An hour later, the limo picked up the sisters, still wailing away. Merriam & hubby were to be married by Father Francesco, who knew all the changes the couple made in the service. But he was the only priest, who could speak Italian, so he was off burying Uncle Giuseppe. They now had Farther Fitzgerald, whom they've never seen. The rest of the Mass consisted of Merriam saying, "No , Father, we've chosen to do....." Finally, the Mass was over.
The couple was whisked off for pics in the park, while we went to the Big Chain Hotel. The photographer came highly recommend. He hopped on a big rock to get an overhead shot, but he slipped, and fell. His arm was all scrapped and bloody. They put the bloody photog in the front of the limo, and Merriam in her white wedding dress, in the back: and off to the ER. Now, I can relate some of the rest. When we got to the hotel, there was a problem. When the hotel was sold, there was a computer glitch. While the event was booked on the "Baltimore Hotel" wedding planner's computer; it was not booked on the Big Chain Hotel's computers.
This was the first event under the new management. No preparations had been made for the wedding. Merriam & hubby came into the hotel. I was the first to see the couple. I told Merriam that the hotel didn't have her wedding scheduled. She growled, "Oh, yes, they do.". But, oh no, they didn't. The hotel apologized and promptly gave their deposit back, The hotel said they would do what ever they promised to do- use of the hall, the meal and everything- completely free, if they would give the hotel a few hours to get things together. The wedding party would be given several suites to rest. Merriam said OK.
