Merriam's Wedding Part 1

Merriam is one of those compulsive people, who way over frets the details. This is the true story of her wedding day. First, she and her boy friend have been living together for well over a year, before they decided to get married a year later. Merriam settled on the Baltimore Hotel for the reception. she agonized on the font of the invitations, etc.., etc. But finally, she sent them out.

That day, on the TV news, they were taking down the "Baltimore Hotel" sign, the hotel had been sold to the Big Chain Hotels. ( I don't remember what hotel chain actually bought the hotel.) No more Baltimore Hotel. So she had to send out corrected invitations. The first thing to go wrong on her wedding day was that she burnt herself with a curling iron. The limo whisked her up to the church, but there was a problem. 92 year old Uncle Giuseppe had died, and his three older sisters were somehow left in the church after the funeral. They were draped totally in black, loudly praying the rosary, and wailing away.

The spoke no English, only Italian. The limo had to come back from the cemetery to get them. An hour later, the limo picked up the sisters, still wailing away. Merriam & hubby were to be married by Father Francesco, who knew all the changes the couple made in the service. But he was the only priest, who could speak Italian, so he was off burying Uncle Giuseppe. They now had Farther Fitzgerald, whom they've never seen. The rest of the Mass consisted of Merriam saying, "No , Father, we've chosen to do....." Finally, the Mass was over.

The couple was whisked off for pics in the park, while we went to the Big Chain Hotel. The photographer came highly recommend. He hopped on a big rock to get an overhead shot, but he slipped, and fell. His arm was all scrapped and bloody. They put the bloody photog in the front of the limo, and Merriam in her white wedding dress, in the back: and off to the ER. Now, I can relate some of the rest. When we got to the hotel, there was a problem. When the hotel was sold, there was a computer glitch. While the event was booked on the "Baltimore Hotel" wedding planner's computer; it was not booked on the Big Chain Hotel's computers.

This was the first event under the new management. No preparations had been made for the wedding. Merriam & hubby came into the hotel. I was the first to see the couple. I told Merriam that the hotel didn't have her wedding scheduled. She growled, "Oh, yes, they do.". But, oh no, they didn't. The hotel apologized and promptly gave their deposit back, The hotel said they would do what ever they promised to do- use of the hall, the meal and everything- completely free, if they would give the hotel a few hours to get things together. The wedding party would be given several suites to rest. Merriam said OK.

Part 2.
Several hours later, we poured into the hall. Things just kept happening. Merriam planned on going to Disney World. So she found this ceramic Mickey & Minnie. He was in a tux, she in a wedding dress. Both were in a small convertible ceramic car. Merriam placed the little car on top of the huge, very high cake. It promptly sunk down deep into the cake-never to be seen again. The hotel didn't have enough staff yet. So, they served the head table before us. Unfortunately, they poured the champagne for the toast.

The Best Man picked up glass and gave his toast. Then guzzled the wine. We raised our empty glasses and pretended to do the same. Now, there had been so many errors, goofs, etc., that this was really funny. It was like, "WHAT ELSE?" (Plus, hell, they have been living together for two years.) And it kept coming. While dancing the dance with her dad, Merriam's dress started to unravel. I don't know dresses , but it unraveled from the waste and where it puffs out. Again, everybody was hysterical. No body noticed it, but the clock had been ticking away. Merriam's to the second time schedule was all messed up. It came time for the couple to leave for Philly by limo. But the driver left hours ago. He was supposed to leave for Philly at 1 PM. It's after midnight. They had to borrow a car, and headed off for Philly. Then to a flight to Miami. a cruise ship for 5 days, then to Disney World.

Part 3. Merriam & Hubby got to the hotel in Philly around 2 AM. But since she & hubby never confirmed their reservations after 8 PM, the hotel gave the room away at midnight. They had no place to sleep. It took hours, till 3:30 AM, going from hotel to hotel to find a room. ( This was when the internet was just getting going.) They had a 5 AM wake up call. Finally, EVERYTHING went as it was scheduled. They got the flight, got down to Miami and right on to the cruise ship. They sailed out into the Caribbean, and into hurricane Hugo. While not IN the hurricane, they were not allowed on deck. The waves were tossing the ship all over the place. Damn Dramamine didn't work. The elevators and corridors had vomit on them. The couple spent the entire cruise in their cabin. But then things looked up. Off to Disney World. They got there, bright and early. Merriam had gotten this book, "How To See Disney World In A day". She had parts underlined and yellowed out. like I said she IS compulsive. They drive up to Disney World. They saw these people walking around at the gate, with signs. Turns out the characters and staff were out on strike. The people at the gate said the park was "Open". But there was only one shop , and one restaurant open. All the rides were closed. But they said the park was "open"-so no refunds. They hopped a flight back to PA. Immediately!!!
I hoped you enjoyed Merriam's wedding.
