Meta to get rid of factcheckers

Mark Zuckerberg says company will ‘dramatically reduce censorship’ across Facebook, Instagram and Threads

Meta will get rid of factcheckers and “dramatically reduce the amount of censorship” on its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Threads, founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced.
Meta to get rid of factcheckers and recommend more political content

More reasons to stay away from Facebook, and I have no idea what Instagram and Threads are.

I only use facebook for connecting with my family and friends , so it really does not matter to me personally, but I am glad to see them changing to less censorship. I have seen examples where even perfectly innocent things were taken wrong and censored on facebook, or you could not even see what the post was because it had been censored.
Some people have said that something they had on their facebook page years ago caused them to be censored now, and locked out of their account for a time period.

Facts are only facts for a brief time anyway.

Last year, I tried setting up a Facebook account with an email address instead of a phone number (an option THEY offered). Initially, the account was set up, but before I ever had a chance to use it, they closed it in less than 24 hours with no explanation.

The only reason I wanted an account was so I could view the pages of some local businesses who have Facebook pages, but no website of their own. Other than that, I have no need for Facebook, so if they don't want me, then "sadly," I'll just have to "struggle through" without them.

I've run into that, too; it's very frustrating.

Some friends will, at times, post important information only to Facebook. This just happened a few weeks ago with a funeral and the related services. I was texted a Facebook link and wrote back that I couldn't access it because I don't have a Facebook account. The person responded that she didn't know how to share it otherwise. In the meantime, however, I had already retrieved the same information from the funeral home's website.

I've seen this with wedding and party invitations, too, with non-Facebook users being inadvertently left out because the person assumes everyone uses it.

I got a little off topic; I apologize, @HermitHogan ! I was happy to see the article about Meta taking measures to reduce censorhip.

It's a positive move. Something else desperately needed is to boot out the "curating" done to Wikipedia articles.
Because why would you blindly trust so-called fact-checkers for Facebook? It's too easy to do your own fact-checking. It can be time-consuming, tracing references back to an original source, or whatever, but we're talking minutes, not days.

Facebook is going to become a total cesspool. I might take a look at BlueSky social media, (I think that's what it's called) which is an alternative to Facebook. Or is it an alternative to X? One of those.

I belong to a few songwriting groups on Facebook, but I don't post much. There's no real sense of community there, like we have here on SF. I also belong to a music forum website and am an active member, but not real active... maybe a few posts a week.

It's an alternative to X. I forgot that I actually have both an X and a BlueSky account, but only because I have to write posts about articles I've edited for a particular publisher, and I check those out to see how the publisher has modified them so I can write more effective posts. It's not easy to sum up an entire research project in 140 or fewer characters.

A.I. could write a 140 character summary for you. You might as well take advantage of technology when it can save you work.

What do you research?

Thanks, but the publisher likely would fire me. ;)

I don't do any research myself any longer; I copyedit and proofread academic books and journals.

But you build your own community. You invite whoever you want, and I'm sure you can still block people.

Become?

What do you call it now? I can't believe how much embarrassingly demented sheepdip I see posted there by deranged relatives who should know better. You don't bother responding because they've become such snowflakes I don't believe they can take an honest worldview.

I was just reading the NY Times and got an ad for open source ai, which asked me to try it. Turns out it's Meta, Facebook's parent company. But hell, I like open source software. So I tried to use it and this is the message I got:

You can't use Meta AI right now
Please try again later.

:ROFLMAO:

I resisted FB for years. Then, while lying in a hospital bed, recovering from yet another heart procedure, out of sheer boredom, I created a page.

That was 4 years ago, and FB has been an absolutely wonderful way for me to keep up with family.

I'm also a member of a couple different groups. I can talk Orioles baseball with other fans, argue about pitching, lineups, etc.

As far as all the political nonsense and whatever else, just scroll on past it.

I like the funny animal snippets, too.

i really enjoy BlueSky. It can be whatever u want it to be. If u only want to see pictures of moons, owls, and birds, then follow just those accounts. If u want to follow politics, follow those accounts. If u only want to see posts from your area, follow those accounts. Follow your interests. Easy to use.

Same here. I've never used Facebook or Threads. I did have an Instagram account for a few years, but I shut it down several months ago. And I mostly followed bunnies and Pomeranians anyway, no politics. 😁
