Microwave Light Question

My old microveve light is only on when it's running. I like to leave the door ajar so moisture isn't trapped inside. For the one that came with the house - its light stays on as long as the door is open. To me that's a waste of electricity. Is there any microwaves that the light stays dark when the door is open?

Are you willing to spend the money on a new microwave oven? The small light bulb in your old microwave is not using enough electricity to make a noticeable increase in you electric bill.
Edit: Microwave ovens do have vents, usually towards the top rear/back, and have a fan as well. I do prop open the microwave oven door to help let out excess moisture, which usually doesn't take too long.

Take out the bulb, if it is really bothering you. BTW that bulb is using about as much electricity as a single bulb on your Christmas tree does. JImB.

Heads up! PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!!!!!!! Years ago (yeah, I know we've come a long way since 1988) my cubemate at work took a day of PTO to do some deep cleaning while her kids were in school.

One of the things she was cleaning was her microwave. She was going to change the bulb. She was electrocuted. The microwave was plugged in.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO ANYTHING EVEN AS ORDINARY AS CHANGING A BULB, UNPLUG THE APPLIANCE FIRST.

Do you think it's only dangerous, to wash and scrub the inside of a microwave oven at the same time that you have the bulb out,?
rather than simply changing the lightbulb, with dry hands?
That would seem safe to do, but is it??????

(Personally I would just leave the microwave, and the lightbulb, the way it functions, and get used to the light, which is what I did do, when in same exact situation.)

The light is supposed to come on when the MW is running, AND, when the door is opened. There shouldn't be much "moisture" in it, unless some liquid overflowed, or spilled....in which case wiping it up would be appropriate. Leaving the door open for more than a couple of minutes should be unnecessary.

Yes, this is what I do... certain things like baked potatoes or something with a lot of liquid leaves moisure behind on the sides and door... I just dry it out with a paper towel.

I don't have a built in one. Just a small counter top. I unplug mine when not in use so I don't have a problem with the door being open to let it dry. The light is on when in use and the door is open.

This gadget should help remove any concern for residule moisture in a microwave.

Protimeter BLD5365 Surveymaster Dual-Function Moisture Meter
4.74.7 out of 5 stars (211)
$655.00

The inside of my microwave doesn't have access to the light without taking it apart.
Right. My newer one is that way, too.
Imo, it's best to operate most appliances, as they are.

It's even possible that they make them that way now, to protect people from wet-washing in a risky manner.
