I can remember seeing the occasional blimp as a kid. These were early 1960s events, most of them NASA related testing by Lear Siegler Industries. My elementary school was just down the block from the "new" 5700 foot runway of the old county airport.

The old multiengine prop airliners and military craft had a unique sound. Every so often somebody flies in one of those classics here and the engines bring a wash of nostalgia.
 
The only times I would see them in the Big Apple was at Coney Island or Rockaway Beach at night and they were commercial blimps with those animated scrolling ads on their sides.
