Mind Games for a Healthy Brain

Brain-training apps are a multi-billion dollar industry, but some researchers maintain that they don’t improve our mental functioning in everyday life. These apps include games to solve simple puzzles and memory games, like arranging the tiles of a mosaic or solving math problems, as quickly as possible. Apps include Brain HQ, HAPPYneuron, and Luminosity (the one that I play 4-5 times per week, and which I enjoy with some frustration). Luminosity claims to measure your overall cognitive ability, math skill, vocabulary and reading skills, problem solving, memory and attention. One of my favorites is Train of Thought, where the goal is to guide trains to their stations, dividing your attention to direct all of them near simultaneously by switching the tracks.

What is your experience? What is your assessment as to their efficacy in boosting our mental capabilities?
