Mississippi kids jump from 49th to 9th in reading scores

I’m happy for the kids but it makes me sad that concentrating on the basics is earth shattering news instead of it being a normal and expected outcome of a public school education.

“Its low-income children are ranked first in the nation. Its black kids are No. 3 in the nation, and its Hispanic kids No. 1.”

It makes me sad that we still feel the need to slice and dice everything along racial and economic lines instead of it being about providing all children with a basic education that helps to ensure a successful start in life.
