Mobile Phone Alert...Oct 3rd

FEMA will be sending an Alert to mobile phones tomorrow, Oct. 3rd, at about 2:20PM EDT. If you have a cell phone, and it's turned on, you should receive this alert test. This will be the first time FEMA has alerted all cell phones in case of a national emergency. This sounds like a good idea, to me. It's kind of like our weather radio which sends a loud test signal every Wed., at about 11AM...to test our radio, in case there is a weather emergency.

Saw this on Facebook a little while ago. I already get alerts on my iPhone - had one this morning about possible flash floods. Also get Amber & Silver alerts.

Under normal, previous, times I probably would have thought it was a good idea, but now I just think it's an invasion of privacy that I'm being sent a message I can't block.

I agree. This could be used so wrongly. 1984 comes to mind.

My only question is that "should it be an actual emergency" how much info will there be about the nature of the emergency. I have gotten Amber alerts on my phone which pretty much say, only, "There is an Amber Alert in your area, check your local news for information". WTH. That tells me nothing. And what if I am on the road and have no access to my local news.

Forgive me for this, but I wish it would say: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Brainless Emergency Alert System. Fast action is needed."
(But I know we can't talk about this)

So it would have been a good idea under the previous administration? But now it is an invasion of privacy ? Or are you going way back ? in your previous times comment?

I'm previous times I was a much more trusting person, which I no longer am. That goes into many areas as I happen to be stuck living in what has become a high crime city. In previous times, the thought of some entity taking over a piece of my property without my consent would have rarely occurred to me, but now it is almost a daily threat.
Think I'll try turning the phone off before the witching hour & see whether or not it can still get by it.

I see...and largely agree.

Sad isn't it?

My little flip phone got the alert and I have texts turned off because I was being charged for advertisements.

I happened to be in a store. Several phones went off around me and folks were grabbing for their phones looking anxious. Thanks to the heads up from here, I was able to reassure them that this was just test! ;)

I probably still would have had a heart attack. LOL
