More bad news from Ukraine

Women can be as bad as men. What else is new?

Women often team up with men to abuse other women and children. Remember that fellow who provided young gals for famous people? He supposedly committed suicide in jail. His second in command was a woman.
yes she still is a woman... a notorious piece of garabage who is serving a 20 year sentence in a US jail... but he was her boyfriend... that foster woman.. was even more evil

China could rally use a lot of those natural resources Russia has. It’s a shame really. Russia should be a great country, but its greasy Oligarchs and others are just looting the place for themselves. And now they are sacrificing other people’s blood to get their hands on Ukraine’s resources.
Good points, China is who I believe the Russians really should worry about. And China is watching the Ukraine and learning how weak the Russians are. I believe they are also supporting Putin to keep the war, and drain on Russian/NATO resources going...

I do feel bad about Russia, potentially a great country, well educated smart people with lots of resources. Seeing them both squandered in this way is a real tragedy. An awful war, as bad for Russia as Ukraine...

More drone strikes and now Poland is rushing troops to the border with Belirus after airspace violation.

How dare Poland guard its boarders. Who do they think they are?

When I was in Poland years ago, I saw a big sign on the side of the building featuring Gary Cooper from the movie High Noon when he marched out to face the bad guys trying to take over the town. But, in his hand, rather than holding a gun he held what appeared to be a ballot. I don’t think Poland will go easy on Wagner Group if they dare cross that boarder. Ukraine is a failure of deterrence. I think NATO and its members have learned that lesson.

Does Belirus want to be part of another war? I don’t know.

Doubt that will happen. Poland is in NATO and I believe that would trigger treaty obligations for most of us to go to war in support of Poland.

Of course I was wrong about Putin and Ukraine in the first place, I'm just not sure how strong his death wish is...

It doesn’t have to be full scale war. It could be a limited air and missile attack on Wagner bases in Belarus, maybe take out some Belarus military sites as a lesson to those who harbor these mercenaries. Putin will be mad at us, but he’s already mad at us.

FWIW, I was also wrong. Just four days before the invasion. I saw the Russia ambassador to the US on Face the Nation telling us invasion of stories were all nonsense. It’s all just a military training exercise.

Poland to stop sending arms to Ukraine in part to Ukraine grain imports from a flooded market since it's tougher for them to export it elsewhere. Poland and some others say the excess grain is hurting their own farmers.

One of Ukraine's strongest allies says it will no longer supply Kyiv with weapons
It's my understanding that Poland and a couple other European countries agreed to take that grain and then export it on Ukraine's behalf to countries where it is supposed to go, such as Africa.

So that article doesn't make sense to me. Unless Ukraine agreed to pay Poland's shipping costs and then said they wouldn't or couldn't. If that's what happened, then it kind of makes sense. I mean, maybe Poland's position is that they will either bear the cost of exporting the Ukrainian grain or bear the cost of military support, but they can't do both.

I have a hard time digesting the situation too. It just seems like some details are left out. It seems like it would be to Poland's advantage to stop Putin in the Ukraine, rather than in Poland.

Lest we forget about Ukraine...

Here is the situation on Monday, October 9, 2023.

Fighting

  • Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said that Ukraine was expecting a record number of Russian drone attacks this winter. Ihnat told national television that data Russia had already used a “record’ number of more than 500 Iranian-made Shahed drones in September, compared with about 1,000 over a six-month period during last winter.
  • Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson had “another terrible night” as it was targeted in some 59 Russian attacks that left 12 people injured, including a mother and her nine-month-old baby. Several houses and gas pipelines were also damaged.
  • Four people including a nine-year-old girl were injured in a rocket attack on Konstantinivka, according to the Donetsk regional Governor Ihor Moroz. Several homes and other buildings were also damaged.
  • The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said the situation on the battlefield in the east and south of the country remained difficult, with troops coming under intense artillery and mortar fire in and around the front line in areas including Bakhmut, Kupiansk and Lyman. The General Staff said Ukrainian forces had inflicted casualties and equipment losses on the Russians

  • The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence said Ukraine had “almost certainly liberated at least 125 square kilometres (48 sq miles) of territory” in the Velyka Novosilka area, west of the town of Vuhledar, since Kyiv’s counteroffensive began. It added that Russian troops were likely to retain a defensive posture to guard against future Ukrainian offensives.

Diplomacy and politics

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke on the phone with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said Ukraine stood with Israel. “I spoke with Netanyahu to affirm Ukraine‘s solidarity with Israel, which suffers from a brazen large-scale attack, and to express condolences for the multiple victims,” Zelenskyy said.
  • Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel would help divert global attention from Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and perhaps work in Moscow’s favour.
