More Beautiful or Handsome Now or Then?

As seniors now, what are your views on the beauty of the younger generation compared to those of our younger days..teens and 20's...

I know we have facial aesthetics and plastic surgeries to contend with these days amongst so many of our young ...but aside from that...talking natural beauty, do you think that todays' younger generation are more... or less naturally beautiful than our own generation when we were younger?

I think we tend to judge beauty by comparing everyone to celebrities (male or female) but IMO every generation and every nationality has physically attractive people whether they be celebrities or just common everyday people that we might pass walking down the street.

Here are pictures of Hedy Lamarr and Charlize Theron, of course from two different generations, plus a beautiful
Asian, Indian and black woman.......I don't feel that any generation, race or nationality has a monopoly on physically attractive people.

Hard to say because I don't remember that far back. In sheer numbers, girls today are better looking because there is more of them.
. Girls are much fatter today so that is a minus. The cliche beauty is only skin deep is silly. Skin deep is all it is supposed to be.
No one thinks of internal organs as beautiful.

There are a lot more mixed race celebrities these days. And although there are exceptions, I think mixed race people tend to be on average more attractive. There's something to mixing it up with regard to the gene pool. I guess we humans are a lot like dogs. If I were to get a dog I would want a good old Heinz 57 Mutt. They are almost always better than those high strung purebreds that tend to be a pain in the butt.

Hard to say Holly I personally feel they are the same, but so much makeup is used by both men and women these days, that they often look more beautiful on the surface.
I know it is said beauty is in the eye of the beholder, to a degree I believe this, but I also think at times an inner beauty shines through what may be plain features making them beautiful.
Straying away from the question, I do think some people become more handsome/beautiful as they age

Re: your first sentence- not necessarily. Not meaning to go off-topic, but if you think of celebrities from decades ago (especially the 1960s and before), many if not most either accepted or took on one specific race 'label' based on their physical appearance. If a person 'looked' black, they 'were,' if a person could 'pass' for white, they often 'did.'
The first example that comes to mind when this subject comes up: if you liked the popular music of that era, and are familiar with Ronnie Spector of "The Ronettes," she was known as a 'black' singer. But her father was white, and her mother was a Cherokee/African-American mix.
I've misplaced it, but awhile back there was a website with biographies of many mixed-race celebrities that were 'labeled' with whichever race they most resembled.

I agree with your last sentence , Tery.... but I was thinking of comparing natural beauties or good looking men, rather than enhanced with make-up, or aesthetics, but of course it's often hard to tell whose had botox etc..

Yes agreed Ike, but I was thinking of natural beauties rather than enhanced.... most celebrities have had 'work' done to their faces...or at the very least professionally made-up.....even men.

Do you think the average 18 year old lad is more or less handsome than yesteryear for example.... ?

I'm kinda in agreement with the mixed race beauties...although there are some stunning Black girls. I can't really compare Black people from then until now, because celebrities aside, I didn't know any Black people back then and in truth I hardly know any now .

Only the styles have changed. It's hard to compare Mary Pickford with Sharon Stone.

Difficult to compare Pappy...because they are so made up to the eyeballs ...but I would hazzard a guess that Mary Pickford never had any surgical enhancements... so on that premise I would have said out of the 2 Mary Pickford would have been the more beautiful...that said...who knows what was under that thick film studio make-up....

As far as "ordinary" teens go, they are definitely more attractive these days. Teens back in my day were plagued with acne and crooked teeth. And, let's face it, pretty ugly hairdos in a lot of cases. No contact lenses and the glasses were pretty unattractive. Figure-wise, I think my entire seventh-grade class (with a few exceptions) couldn't have filled out an a-cup bra collectively.

Now the kids have braces early on and get medical attention for their acne before it gets bad, so more of them look "perfect". The girls are pretty much well-developed. Hairdos are attractive (mostly). Most everyone has contacts or Lasix.

Back then, most everyone went through an "awkward stage". I don't see today's kids doing that.

LOL...is that More or less...or just the same ?

Holly I didn't figure that you'd let me off the hook that easy.:D

Okay here we go......I consulted my BFF Google and I looked at pictures of people in general, not celebs that had makeup slathered all over them, from several generations back till now and I believe that "as a general rule" we have evolved into a better looking society of people.

Although apparently in some gene pools the evolution process seems to work a little slower than in others or in some instances may actually reverse itself somewhat......case in point, the top snapshot is of my great, great, great, great, great granddaddy and the picture on the bottom is of me taken just this week.

Ike -

We might share some bloodlines. I also found an old picture of my distant great-great-etc. grandfather, and a recent pic of me. The similarities are amazing!

I read a scientific study done many years ago with new born babies,
Obviously, they are not prejudiced or influenced by culture.
They looked at many different female faces and observers noted their
responses that they liked or disliked the faces. Babies seemed to prefer---

faces that are symmetrical down the middle.
Higher cheekbones
Large eyes
Full lips.

Actually, that appeals to me too! This suggests that there is a universal beauty, regardless of race.
Maybe you can find it on the internet
that's all I recall now.

I dunno. I think we had some pretty good looking kids back when I was in High School.

This was our main designated hot girl:

And she had a killer body too.

I think she could hold her own in the looks department with any High School girl today.

But it went to her head. She was pretty haughty.

Now with Dudes it's harder because looks aren't the main thing. So I'm gonna go with the guy who was the most popular with the girls.

That would be this guy:

I don't know if he was the best looking guy in our class but he had all this other stuff going on that the chicks like. He was super self confident without being arrogant. He made the best grades of anyone, took all the advanced courses, was student body President and he went on to become a medical doctor. His nickname was "Superman"
