More College Students Behaving Badly. Academic Cheating

There have been articles highlighting cheating in Australian universities recently.
It mostly involves paying someone else to write assignments for students.

Our unis take a lot of fee paying overseas students whose parents expect them to come home with a qualification
Failure is not an option, hence the cheating.

My oldest grandson was approached by a Chinese woman, and offered a good sum of money, to write papers for overseas students.

I liked the way the mathematics school at my university handled this. We had weekly or fortnightly assignments but they were only worth 20% of the final mark. The rest was for the final exam. What's more, if you did better on the exam alone than on the 80:20 split with your assignments you were assessed on just the final exam.

This acknowledged the possibility that some students would hand in assignments that were not their own work but then the final exam would not be as high as the assignment marks. A student like myself, who grappled with the assignments and frequently had to hand in incomplete answers because I just couldn't get them out, but who was learning from my efforts, would be more likely to do better in the final exam.

There are ways to expose cheats and to ensure they don't benefit from the practice. That is the best way to discourage it.
