More non-whites than whites enrolled in American public schools for the first time!

This historical event has vast implications for the future of the nation. If this segment of the population takes hold and works at getting an education then it bodes well, but should the drop-out rate go up then the nation may falter. I won't be here to see it but I hope that the former occurs as you surely do, too...
 

I need this unpacked a little. What's going on?

Our private schools are packed to the rafters with Asians and in our selective schools you can play spot the Aussie (although in reality they are all Aussies; this is a bogan game) because their parents are very keen on a good education for success in life. The poor little sods have no social life and no fun because they are always being coached after school and on the weekends, and I don't mean by sports coaches.
 
It is a cultural thing with Asian families as we also see this here. The question is whether or not the other non-white groups will rise to the occasion. I used to tell my kids that the middle class must replace itself in all vocations or the country will head downhill...
 

Only if they learn the skills necessary, and there is no guarantee that they will due to ghetto life that may consist of single undereducated moms and missing fathers in some cases and the lack of language and other skills in others, to put it very simply...
 
Odd isn't it? Here, Public Schools are only for the wealthy! Then there are Private Schools [for the well off] and then there are State Schools which of course are free.Well, paid for by our taxes anyway.
These non white children at your public schools will hopefully do well, but here children of all colours are not doing so well [education wise] at our free schools, there are good State Schools of course but an awful lot of failing ones as well.The standards of teachers has gone downhill in lots of cases it seems.Also a lot of trained teachers leave in the first 2 years to find another profession.All [or most] Asian children tend to do well [at all schools] because of their strict parents, but children of black African/Carribbean parentage are doing badly, as are a lot of white children from poor families.
 
There have always been poor parents though, but now there are so many one parent families and couples living on benefits, some poor kids hardly have a chance, as the 'parenting' is virtually non-existant.Rough, chaotic, hopeless parents, etc also drug addict parents and drunk ones as well [my son-in-law who is a police officer sees them all.]
 
Sounds similar to our situation. All kinds of reform have been thrown at the problem along with millions of dollars in programs and facilities to little avail. Further, the slashing of benefits, larger class size with students with all kinds of difficulties along with longer hours have diverted many from the teaching profession...
 
Another factor that affects the schooling of low socioeconomic children is that they often live in rental housing and for various reasons (eviction, lease expires or rent goes up) the family may have to move several times a year. Schooling is discontinuous and very hard for the kids to cope.

They need stable public housing but funding for new housing stock is drying up.
 
Housing is not the issue for the most part here. It is the dysfunctional family that is...
