More plane trouble, wing starts disintegrating in mid air/flight

More plane trouble caught in mid flight when a passenger noticed a wing starting to fall apart mid flight in the air. The plane was able to make an emergency landing.

Passenger captures shocking video of ‘wing coming apart’ on United flight making emergency landing

I don't know if these incidents have been happening for decades and passengers are catching them with cell phones or things are being missed in preflight or maintenance inspections.

But a whew.

That's bad. Too bad airport insiders will most likely not talk to reporters and give them the scoop on what goes on at the airports. Too bad we don't have enough reporters anymore who would like to do such a story. Too bad we don't have enough editors and producers who want to assign reporters to such a story.

But, we have YouTube, so that's enough, yes?

That damage is to the trailing edge of the slat. If that’s going to happen, it’s better on the trailing edge off the slat than the leading edge on the slat. The slats and flaps is what gives control to the aircraft. Had that slat came off, it would have made controlling the plane somewhat difficult, but controllable. Was it possible for the plane to crash? Possibly, but with experienced pilots, it shouldn’t have. United’s pilots are trained to handle these types of situations using the simulator.

That slat is not caused by wear and tear or just started breaking apart, it appears to me that the slat was damaged by something striking it. However, the material used to make the slat could have been defective. I am sure the NTSB will be investigating this incident. The NTSB is going to be busy with the incidents that have happened just in the past few months. I don’t know what’s going on at Boeing, but they better figure it out.

The plane was flying from SFO to BOS. I flew that route a number of times and the same size plane, the B-757.

That is serious enough to frighten people about flying
in a Boeing Aircraft, all of these mishaps that we have
heard about lately, must be affecting the sales book of
the company.

Mike.

It makes me believe that they are in a hurry to turn out planes because they have a lot of orders. Their quality control or Inspectors may not being doing their job properly either.

I've always loved travelling by plane. But there was a time in the 1970's that some people were afraid to fly bacause of some wack jobs, who were caught trying to bring a bomb aboard a plane. Some planes did go down because of that. Now it's going to happen again, but for a different reason. I used to tell family members for every plane that had problems, hundreds if not thousands around the world were landing safely everyday.

But now with all of these problems with how the plane is made, I don't think that I would be too eager to board a plane.

Most of the planes flying around are old enough to vote. Average age is 10 years. The stresses of flying and landing multiple times take a toll, you need constant, and comprehensive maintenance. That kind of upkeep costs big bucks, I'm not sure airlines could manage the upkeep, and still make money.

I saw the video of that yesterday on Twitter, and it looked pretty scary. There was also some guy who was trying to open one of the cabin doors during a flight and several other passengers had to literally climb on top of him and subdue the guy to stop him, and the plane made a quick emergency landing to get the guy off of the plane.
Before that, there was a plane that took off and you could see the tire come off the plane and bounce down onto the ground.

We have always had plane crashes for one reason or another, but now we are having planes malfunctioning and literally falling apart in the air from either shoddy work building the plane, or poor maintainence afterwards. And it seems like we are seeing more crazy people trying to open the doors in the air, too, which didn’t happen before recently.

We (oldman and I are going to breakfast and then play 9 holes of golf,. It’s supposed to go to 55 today. Then, we are going out to the airport. He (oldman) wants to find out if they will let him look at some wings on the planes sitting at the gates. I doubt that will happen, even though he holds a TSA pass, I doubt if they will allow him onto the tarmac.

I have to wonder are alot of these issue coming from lack of routine inspections and/or equipment checks or are mechanics only repairing/looking at known problems. I always heard if the pilots and crews did all pre flight checks flights would be delayed for hours and many of them are purposely ignored to speed things up.

I do my checks in less than 10 minutes. As long as I flew, I knew what to look for and what was important and needed a closer look. When I flew out in mornings, I did my walk around with a flashlight.
