Most Employees Probably Over Rated Come Evaluation/Review Time

Meaning the butt kissers and go to people float to the top in most companies. Nothing new here...

There's a lot of stuff that floats to the top.....just check in the toilet one of these days - lol.

Boy, I must have missed out on those overly generous bonuses, even though I could be a champion butt-kisser when the situation called for it. One of my bosses told me that one of my strongest skills was knowing which butts needed to be kissed and which ones needed to be kicked.

The large national companies/corporations I worked for tended to have unattainable metrics & goals. Most management knew this so to keep things going they would either over rate the employee and/or ignore any potential discipline & training so they would have a competent but not exceptional employee doing the job. Some managers always put you in the middle. But in the world of corporate management platitudes 'exceptional' or 'outstanding' is the only result, also heard must 'exceed' many a time as well.

Playing the numbers game literally turns the job into a game/us vs them. Even the article admits certain categories tend to be meaningless.

I think most evaluations/reviews are there as a 'just in case' tool come time to promote, layoff or fire an employee.

The butt kissers thrive in the corporate environment and rise up in the organization to their greatest level of incompetence.

Exactly and working for a corporation can be like being in a big dysfunctional family. The last store I worked in for instance. The hired a new assistant manager...let's call him Joffrey. All bottom line profit margin blather. Then things became ugly, if we could have poisoned him somebody would have. He culled his own personal team player from the lowliest of the store associates...one of the guys who gathers carts, IQ of a gerbil and only two years on the job.

Joffrey promoted him to department head. What this young man doesn't know is that if something reflects badly on Joffrey he will be thrown under the bus. Some people have been there more than a decade and are in their senior years. Someone blacked out the eyes of all the pictures of the new department manager in the back room. So yes there was much silent resentment. I don't blame them. You're in your sixties have given this place fifteen years. They promote a gerbil.

I never lasted long enough to get my first evaluation - usually I had already been taken away in handcuffs ...

Handcuffs? What good are they to a man with your knowledge of martial arts? I would think more of maybe ankle bracelets and belly chains.

I would rather have my raise be dependent upon my evaluation than have an across the board increase where even the dead wood gets the same raise as the worker who puts out more energy and is worth more to his or her company. I always got my raise based on my evaluation, but we also got a COLA as well. Unions, you know how that works, right?
