Most people can't get through dinner without doing one thing
Most people can’t get through a sit-down dinner without checking their phone, according to a new study.

Our addiction to technology is so bad with new research suggesting that more than half of people look at their phone even while dining out with friends or family.

According to a YouGov poll in the UK, 55% of respondents said they checked their phone during dinner, while 53% said they look at their phone even when dining out with friends or family.

More than half 54% said they could not go more than two days without their device before it bothered them

The research also suggested that about two-thirds of mobile phone users 65% check their phones while in bed despite sleep issues having been linked to the blue light emitted by phone screens and other devices.

Are you one?...Be honest!!

I always read in bed at night to fall asleep rather than watch TV. I have hard copy books and also books downloaded to my phone, so sometimes I'll use my phone to read in bed.

Depending on who I'm with, I might check my phone during a meal. It's fairly common practice in my circle to place our phones on the table when we sit down for a meal. If they do, I do. If they don't, I don't.

Don't have a smartphone.i do take the iPad to bed and play a few word games but then power it down. And I never check my basic pay as you go mobile during meals.

I’m nowhere near ! My mobile is hanging around somewhere in the bottom of my bag for emergencies, I may check it when I get home if I think about it, and it’s never taken into the bedroom

"Technology", and cell phones, etc., are great...IF used in moderation. Those who cannot go more than a few minutes without having their cell phone glued to their face are obviously overlooking more important aspects to life, IMO. I spent my entire working career deeply involved in "high tech", and appreciate all the good aspects it has brought us, and I think personal computers and the Internet are one of the best things that have happened in the past half century. However, Maintaining one's physical conditioning and staying active is far more important, as we age, than spending hours on Facebook, etc. We keep a basic Tracfone active, but only carry it when away from the house, in case we need to contact the kids, or they, us, etc....or some highway emergency while on the road.

I sometimes wonder what kind of "side effects" may occur in the future to those who have their cell phone glued to their ear for hours every day. Cell phones operate on RF energy, and when that energy is centered just an inch from a person's brain for extended periods of time, I suspect that there may eventually be some deterioration of the basic brain functions.

I read the same article and have similar feelings about it - perhaps there is a "blocking device" you could employ at your dinner party to stop people getting a signal on their phones(?).

"Luckily" no one rings me, so I'm all ears and fully engaged with whatever repartee comes forth during a party or whatever  !

Never. I have an iphone but you'd never know it. It usually hangs out in the bottom of my purse with the gum wrappers and a dead battery. Even when the land line rings I don't answer it.

Now you will find me at the table with my Kindle. :D I'm always reading something.

If I'm eating with others I'm fully engaged with them and my food.

I'm not much of a texter, and an incoming call goes to VM (unless there's a pending emergency).

I see nothing wrong with host asking - no, make that INSISTING - guests turn phones OFF and leave at a table in foyer. Otherwise don't even sit down. No exceptions, no excuses.

I have heard of hosts insisting phones belonging to their dinner guests be turned off and placed in a basket with a sticky to identify. I see nothing wrong with that either.

Younger generations would never go for this. They don't even bother to leave or check a message.

nope,don't have a smart phone.
I rather have a conversation eye to eye with the people I'm with instead of watching them text or ck their *****phones, how rude Sue

I don't look at it during dinner unless I get a beep telling me that I have a message from one of the kids or grandkids.

At night, never. The phone doesn't even enter my bedroom, it's being charged in another room.

Not in my house, we share one old Tracfone and that's usually turned off unless we need to make a call. We do always have the TV on in the kitchen while we're eating. If we have company for dinner, no TV on, maybe low volume music in the background.

I saw a mommy with her little one guessing 1 1/2 yrs old with a mobile device in its hand sitting in a shopping cart oblivious to the world all around. Recall the 60s-70s when we all screamed we don't communicate!?

You know we knock people who are always texting to each other and then I say to myself. What am I doing now?

This is how we communicate on a seniors forum and we text each other to people who we don't even know.

Actually I prefer text messages instead of speaking on the phone because I'm hard of hearing.

Same here. Read myself to sleep with my Kindle which is back-lit so that room can be dark. I drift off to sleep and trusty Kindle saves my place for when I next want to read.

As much as I enjoy SF, I don't take my laptop to the dinner table so I don't miss any new posts. Usually I check the forums I frequent when I sit down to rest for a minute.
