Mother doesn't like the idea of son moving his bedroom to the basement (TV show episode)

This was an episode of a TV sit-com. Two brothers, age 15 and13, who shared a bedroom, were constantly squabbling. The dad decides to make over a section of the basement into another bedroom for the younger one. Afterwards, the mother frets because she "doesn't want her baby so far away". She even gets a pillow and blanket and goes to the basement to be near him. " I'm thinking, "Jeepers, at least he's in the house and safe. What's so bad about that?" Was the mom over-reacting and being overly protective. The kid is 13! How would you feel about one of your kids having a bedroom in the basement?

Right away, I'm thinking - "is there a nearby fire exit?". Other than being sure it's a dry basement, I'd have no problems with it.

I'd more than likely give up my bedroom to the other son, and make a very comfortable bedroom in the basement for myself and spouse (and be sure to have a couple of fire extinguishers available).

No boy, whose bedroom is in the basement, wants him mom coming down to his room. Good thing there were wooden stairs so he could hear them creek. Mom might have gotten an unwanted surprise. . I have boys, I know this to be a fact.

Most TV shows are gross exaggerations of typical lives and this one sounds like it's no exception.

Most basements have small windows at the top. I've known a lot of suburban NYers who converted their basements into living quarters for adult children's use until they got their financial footing. After the kids moved some of those basement apartments were used as rental units.

I assume most basement apartments aren't up to "fire code". When I was a kid, my parent's ran a boarding house. The Fire Department did regular checks, and they were very strict about bedrooms in the basement.

When I read the OP, I thought she might be referring to The Goldbergs- "Beverly Goldberg" was a true "SMOTHER!!"
