Mother Drives Into Ocean In An Attempt to Kill Herself and Her Children

I heard about this on the news today, a mother driving her kids into the surf in a mini van, with the children yelling for help that she was trying to kill them. The youngest of the children was strapped into a car seat.

Luckily, the rescuers acted quickly and were able to save the children. The mother is being held for charges and mental evaluation.

These stories really anger me. If this woman was that mentally disturbed, why didn't a friend, neighbor, relative, look into whether she was capable of caring for those children and assuring their safety. It seems to me that there must have been some unusual behavior and signs all along...and maybe the kids could have been cared for by a responsible relative until she received the help she needed.

It reminded me on one of the past stories of a mother driving into a river killing all of her children, of course she herself survived. Too many stories like that, IMO.

If these people want to commit suicide, that's their right, go and do it. Do NOT take the lives of these poor innocent children along with you. Even if they ended up in a care facility or foster home, at least they would be alive and still have a chance to enjoy their own lives.

The very end of this NBC News article states:
Incredibly, officers had spoken to Wilkerson just 2½ hours earlier, after relatives called police to say she had been "talking about demons that day before she left the house," Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood told WESH.
Johnson said Wilkerson told the responding officers that she was headed to a shelter because she was afraid of her ex-husband — and because she was lucid, officers couldn't do anything, Johnson said.
 

I heard something like that too on the evening news, I'm just glad the kids are alive after all this. She definitely had some problems, glad others were involved to the degree that they were, or this could've ended differently. So sad that she was pregnant too, and another baby would be lost if she succeeded.
 
A few years ago there was a tragedy not too far from where we live. A father killed his car full of children, and himself, with carbon monoxide from the exhaust pipe! He had had a row with his wife and wanted to punish her!:mad:
 
This woman is pregnant and mentally ill . Her family tried to get the cops to stop her but they let her go. She needed to be committed, but instead she is charged with attempted murder. More mental health is needed and less prisons
