Stories like this break my heart. Her relatives knew she was mentally ill. Then there's speculation that she may have had post partem depression.
"Relatives called police after Merdy allegedly told them "the babies are gone" and "the kids are gone." When questioned by detectives, Merdy told them she had been "dreaming of walking the kids in the water," according to the law enforcement official."

A friend of mine had a daughter-in-law that took her own life due to postpartum depression . He said the family never saw it coming. It just devastated the entire family. The only good thing ..... she didn't harm the child.
He [my friend] said two counselors came and talked to the family, during that they [the counselors] stated , there was no explaining it.
 

So incredibly sad. What a tragic loss of life for those children. I hope the mother gets the help she needs and not just hostility and judgement. I appreciate that may be difficult for some, but those who have suffered MH issues themselves or have a family member or friend who suffers...compassion goes a long way. And my heart breaks for the police and first responders, too. I always think about those who are first on the scene of tragic cases...what they witness, what they have to process, how long it takes for them to be able to sleep that night. Thank God for all of those wonderful people and the work they do.

Here in the UK we've had several cases where children removed from abusive homes were returned by social workers, only for the abuse to continue and culminate in the death of the child at the hands of one or both parents and his or her partner. Drugs and/or alcohol seem to be mentioned often. God forgive those who purposefully commit such wicked deeds against a child.
