How very sad. It was good that the judge charged her. It makes it clear to others that you cant bring your old country’s laws into your new country and expect it to be ok.
He was trying to go easy on her. She herself was a child bride back in Afghanistan and had no education. Her ignorance has cost her dearly.

The publicity will serve as a warning to others who try to arrange marriages for their daughters, at any age.

That's the difference. New immigrants don't want to assimilate as readily as in the past. They bring their crap with them & won't let go. IMO
I disagree. The Hasaras, on the whole, have settled in very well in Australia.

Before 1980, relatively few Hazaras came to Australia for educational purposes. During the 1980s Soviet–Afghan War and the 1990s civil war, over 5,000 Hazaras arrived in Australia. The Hazara Australian community has produced a sizable number of individuals notable in many fields, including law, medicine, engineering, teaching and business.[7]

Most Hazara Australians are fluent in English but their first language is in Hazaragi dialect of Persian Language.

I'm speaking of my own area of the world. Burkahs everywhere. People living here for decades without bothering to learn English, because they don't have to, being sheltered in their own communities, like many Russians who bring their serf mentality with them. Kids coming into schools not knowing a word of English, which is hard on teachers. Wanted to say something else, but I forgot!

We had a similar situation in the northwestern part of the state back in 1998. The difference was that the father killed his daughter for refusing to marry the arranged marriage. The daughter was 17 at the time and the man that was coming from Iraq with the assumption he was going to marry the daughter was 44.

The daughter was in love with another high school senior, but the father didn’t accept that arrangement. We had to accumulate a lot of evidence through e-mails and texts to put this trio of lovers together. The judge seemed to be perturbed with all the messages being written in Arabic and translated into English. He called a recess for a month to allow him enough time to sort it all out.

The end result was the father being charged and found guilty of first degree murder. The mother also played a part in the plot to kill the daughter and was charged as an accessory before the fact. The father was given life w/o parole and the mother was also found guilty and given 8 years.

What frustrated me most was the fact that when people come to our country, they have a belief that their traditions can be used in their new homeland. When people from a foreign country come here and apply for citizenship, they are well supplied with information as to how our legal system works and their traditions that are counter to our laws are not acceptable.

We do have exactly the same situation in Germany. And not only this. Rape, often also gang rapes every day, knife stabbings every day, some of them fatal. Sometimes there are so called 'honor killings' of daughters. Riots in public swimming pool areas do happen often. In the newspapers you read of "a man" or "a group of young men". Often the press conceals their nationality, but critical readers know who they are. Nevertheless there is no deportation of such people, and a lot of them are not even convicted. It's a shame!

Same here.. not here where I live but in many places in the UK. Just this morning, in the news.. there was a story of a whole bunch of people fighting at a well known northern beauty spot...this has never happened until recently.. and as people say.. it doesn't take long to realise that it's a 'minority'' causing the problems...

Moment huge brawl erupts at Dovedale stepping stones beauty spot

..and sadly I have to say, it usually is... It's not PC to say it , but it's the truth, and just yesterday there was a massive protest in London, due to the fact that we're losing our country to this...

Can't go on because it's all politics, but it's fact.

Sorry to disallusion you but it isn't just people migrating who don't understand the ways of people in other countries.

My daughter recently has a trip overseas and was travelling with some American tourists. She was amused by some of them complaining loudly "Why can't these people all learn to speak "American"? When challenged by other English speakers, she doubled down on wanting them to speak "American".

In my experience, every wave of migrants from the Irish to the Italians, Balts, Vietnamese and now from various African states, they all tried to fit in but it wasn't easy for them. Their children also had it hard, trying to adapt to two, often quite opposite, cultures. Like the children of the original convicts, they often fell foul of the law but the next generation were the people who developed this nation.

It takes a couple of generations but that is how most of us grew into our respective national identities.

The pics I've seen of Halimi, the hubby, doesn't exactly show him as a little charmer. I question how you make the legal case for "forcing a marriage". The bride was 21, not 16. And the family comes from an area where arranged marriages are the norm. So, wouldn't all those marriages fall under this law?
My mom said things that might be considered as against the law. I don't think she would have actually killed me, but should I have her arrested for attempted murder? That's why I question the legality of this law.

Oh yeah. No one is exempt from not being able to abide by the country’s laws they are visiting or going to be living in. Boy, do I have stories for from several different language persuasions and also when I have traveled with other Americans to other countries when we go as a church group.

Even going state to state can be a challenge for some people. I have stopped people that gives me the old, “Well, we don’t do it like that back home.” What’s the old saying, “When in France do as the French do,” or something to that effect. If in doubt, you can always go by, “C'est La Vie.”

Rome ! ''When in Rome do as the Romans do''

Trust me…you can lead a horse yo water…but you can’t make them drink. Prosecuting someone to “send a message” has never worked in the past…so plumb stupid to think it will now.
