Mourning Doves

I live in a rural area and have always had Mourning Doves in my yard. My husband died 2 1/2 years ago. After he died Doves were in my yard all the time. Then about one year after my husband died, they disappeared. All day I have had a lone Mourning Dove sitting on my porch. I could walk right up to it and it would just look at me. He finally flew off about 4:00 PM. I know Mourning Doves have a spiritual meaning. What do you think about my experience today?

Georgia, we have them here all the time. We provide water in two places in out yard. They seem to know we won't harm them so we, too, can approach without frightening them. We also have collared doves, they drink and go but are not nearly as sociable.

Dove season starts Sept 1st. Just kidding, was it a migratory or one of the Asians that are pushing the smaller ones out.

We have several sitting on the power lines. When we go inside, they fly down into our back yard to feed on the seed that
falls out of the bird feeder. They are very leery and skittish, so we're careful not to disturb them when we're out there.

They are very pretty and could NEVER even think of hunting or eating them.

Asian or Turtledove is what your supposed to say. Didn't you ever watch Monty Python?
on a quick note, collared doves or Asian doves being about 2x larger than turtle doves, have literally wiped turtles or mourning doves out of some areas. They eat twice as much and do not migrate. Doves don't sweat and they pant like dogs, as a result their water needs are tremendous. Changes in migration routes are usually do to some change in the water in that area. If you hear the cooing it's the start of their mating, and they have 6 batches a year, with an average life span per bird of about 5 years. They aren't talking to you but rape maybe on their minds. They are the largest count migratory bird in the Western Hemisphere and are the field mice of birds in natures plan in that they provide a food source for everything from snakes to cats people drop off in the country as they migrate south.
In Mexico and Argentina were I've hunted them they fill they sky until they block out the sun and fall on the local crops devasting some of the locals food source. Providing the locals with several meals and some relief by hunting always provides a welcome. They breast out the doves sautéed with some type of local wild rice and mushrooms.

I knew there was a movie in here. If you had a spiritual encounter that's great. It called Gnosticism.

Not to trivialize your experience, with 70 million of them you simply share an experience common with s lot of people as exemplified by Meander's reference. CArl Jung called this a synchronicity, which in this case may be a serendipitous synchronicity.

GL. Here is a quote for you. It works for me also. Hamlet Act 1 Scene 5

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
than are dreamed of in your philosophy.

GL, many mental health professionals believe strongly as you do. Some of us have witnessed miracles. :love_heart:

There are rational explanations for everything. There are times to set them aside and cherish an emotion. I am sorry for your loss. I have always fed the animals and birds. Many times I have made eye contact and whether real or imagined felt an understanding pass between us. Anything that connects you with your husband's memory is a good thing. The experience was yours and is not to be judged by others.

Well said Underock, I agree. Linda, I would have viewed the visit of the lone Mourning Dove as a special connection also, we do have strong communications with animals at times. Sincere condolences for the loss of your husband Linda...hugs.

Oh that's a lovely link Meanderer .

Georgia...as you said already, you have lots of Doves in your garden , always have...but just on that one day its as if you were given a message to say you'll never be forgotten , ...and you know, I believe as you do that the spirit can come and visit in some other form!! I really hope it helped bring you comfort !

Before m husband died we always had doves in our yard. One year after he died, they all disappeared until yesterday when this one lone Dove shows up. That is why there had to be some kind of spiritual meaning.

It does have a spiritual meaning and connects you with the rest of humanity in what Carl Jung called the "collective unconscious". If you are interested in learning more look into Joseph Campbell's "Mask of the Gods".

When I graduated from nursing school a beautiful white dove came to stay in my tree.. It returned and stayed for weeks until it finally moved on. Perhaps you don't know that one of the symbols of nursing is a white dove. I thought it was a sign that I had made the right career choice and would be successful.
