Much afoot Downunder this morning

Troops are being farewelled today for the Middle East. The PM has interrupted his week in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory to see them off and the Leader of the Opposition will be there too, saying "Me too".

600 police had raided homes in a dozen homes in Sydney making arrests, confiscating computers and employing sniffer dogs to search for explosives. Similar raids are taking place in Brisbane, Queensland. Our security alert status was recently raised from medium to high. This means a terrorist attack is deemed likely where before it was just possible.

We are waiting on news of the referendum in Scotland because somehow the breaking up of the United Kingdom is very unsettling to us. It seems like the earth's axis is shifting somehow. It doesn't really affect us in any way yet we are still disturbed about it.

DW what else could the leader of the opposition say? I cant think that Mr Abbotts taking time form his show in Arnham Land will be much mourned by the Aboriginies...but , he has ha da lot of press from it....so he will be happy to get some positive press after his disgusting budget which aims to impoverish our pensioners and university students further...while also taking aim at our medicare system.....(under his proposals even pensioners would be forced to pay to see their doctor)
As far as the scottish situation....I would tend to think that this is being reported purely in the way any other international event is.
The raids in Sydney and Qld? Yes. good work there!

The Deputy Leader of the Opposition did say this morning in an interview that Labor supports military assistance to the government in Iraq but that the situation in Syria is very different. She warned against mission creep in that direction.

The Arnhem Land stunt is just that, a stunt. It is also likely to be a very expensive stunt if past records are anything to go by.
From the Independent:
Tony Abbott claims to be a friend of Indigenous Australians, regularly spending time in their communities "volunteering". Martin Hodgson puts to rest this enormously expensive lie.

BY NOW, we’ve all heard it.

As soon as criticism of the LNP’s policies on Indigenous Affairs (or lack thereof) are raised, the default position of LNP members, journalists and the apologists of it in action is rolled out.

Tony Abbott volunteers in Indigenous communities, so we are told.

He goes for a week a year and these statements of “fact” are usually then followed by a barrage of holier than thou tripe about how much Mr Abbott could teach the rest of us…

So sure of this position ‒ so much has it become the accepted reality ‒ that statements from the LNP and journalists come to us on this subject with gay abandon.

For the rest of this article which talks about how much the taxpayers have paid out for TA's volunteering before the camera stunts prior to the 2013 election, read on here:

As for the police operation this morning - sterling work, boys and girls in blue, and well done to the spooks. They appear to have thwarted real threats to members of the public by local agents in the thrall of ISIS.

He seems to like shacking up with fit young men.
He's not often home with the wife these days.

TONY Abbott will live with Australian Federal Police recruits when staying in Canberra while The Lodge is being renovated.
The prime minister-elect has rejected more expensive accommodation or a hotel for his living arrangements while in Canberra - in part because of the need for security upgrades, News Corp Australia newspapers report.
The modest flat, in a red brick AFP building close to Parliament, will include a kitchenette and security from AFP officers and their junior colleagues.
Importantly for Mr Abbott, the $120 a night student quarters include a gym.

Anyway, rumour has it that his chief of staff is his main consort these days, but he's a man so I guess that's all OK.
On the other hand she may simply be the voice he is listening to through the earphones he wears most of the time when being questioned by the media.

Before his marriage, when he was a student, his girlfriend told him she was pregnant and he ran like a frightened rabbit and dumped her. She gave the baby up for adoption and years later a young man turned up, claiming to be his son. TA accepted that he might be but DNA didn't support the claim.

He has no business pointing the moral finger at anyone else, nor should he step up to cast the first stone. Doesn't stop him though.

My, my, such a loose lot is OZ...
As one of my favourite nuns used to say "Morality is not only about what goes on below the waist".

Bad plumbing along with bad food, not a good combination...
Bad food? I think they eat quite well out there in OZ. Yes , good work with the arrests there today as well. We are still waiting to hear how Scotland voted, think it will be Friday pm before we know for sure. It IS unsettling, especially thinking that 50% of the population there probably don't want to be part of the UK.Puts us off a visit there, I can tell you.

I'm going to take it at face value. I believe there are terrorists out there that want to do all sorts of nasty things. But with several nations and public wishy washy on a full military commitment to eliminate the IS one must take a brief step back and think was this "a" plot or group of want to bes boasting OR is this a realistic threat being over played for support? Was this plot moved along or enabled by the authorities in anyway? A press conference like that is a career maker for many ambitious types.

Taking it at face value I'm still stunned at the numbers of those from or in a western democratic nation willing to do things like beheadings let alone join IS. I can understand nationals from other countries but the number of local people joining IS I find astounding. I don't think a lot of these IS want to bes realize how hard an actual beheading is either. It's not like on the Highlander with one quick clean swipe. It's more than likely a messy killing followed by a nasty beheading. A guillotine is the only 'clean' way and I doubt even those are 100%. This is where I part ways with the hardliners. This should be treated as a murder plot if for no other reason to not give these thugs political credence.

Considering an arrest has been made, names named, how it can be taken at face value, !!
Sydney and Brisbane, the ABC understands.

Mohammad Ali Baryalei, a former Kings Cross bouncer and part-time actor, is understood to have made the instruction to kidnap people in Brisbane and Sydney and have them executed on camera. That video was then to be sent back to IS's media unit, where it would be publicly released.
Omarjan Azari, 22, from the western Sydney suburb of Guildford, was one of 15 people detained during the operation in Sydney and is accused of conspiring with Baryalei and others to act in preparation or plan a terrorist act or acts, court documents show.
