Musical Instruments

What's your favorite instrument? Why if there's a reason? Do you now or have you in the past ever played an instrument?
If so what was it? Was it your to choice to play or maybe because your parents made you do it?

As a child, I was forced to learn and practice the guitar. My father was my teacher. For years afterward, I didn't even like the sound of guitars.

In my early 20s, I somehow acquired a concertina. I was amazed at how it worked.

I soon traded the concertina for a violin, and took lessons for a short while. I was actually quite talented, but my roommate's dog cried when I tried to practice. Thus ended my music career.

It would be nice to have and learn to play the bandoneon (a kind of concertina, used in tango music). But it isn't going to happen; bandoneons are rare and expensive.

In 3rd grade I started playing the French Horn in our small school band. We were lucky as the local college had a music curriculum and the professor (PhD) in charge of that program also taught the grade school band and high school band. he was tough and demanding. I played in the band and orchestra (high school) until my sophomore year (the school made me quit if I played sports).

I enjoyed the heck out of playing in orchestra.

50 years later I decided to learn the guitar, as I still miss playing music. I decided to play a Classical Guitar which has nylon strings and a softer sound than a steel string guitar (Acoustic or Electric). This guitar style is frequently used to play Folk Songs, Classical Music, and Flamingo Music.

My hands have stiffened, and I have lost some of my hand strength. So, I am working on that as well as learning to play. What is good is that I already can read music and I understand how to practice. So far, I am really enjoying the practice and in time will focus on Folk Music and some Classical songs.

When I was in high school, my parents acquired a baby grand piano, so I had to take lessons. My first teacher was a nice man who used to come to the house. I forget what happened to him. Then I took lessons from my girlfriend's mother at her house. Her mother was a mean, nasty old b*tch. I disliked her so much that I didn't look forward to the lessons. After a while, I told my parents I didn't want to play anymore, and if they forced me to go, they'd just be wasting their money. Thus ended my piano lessons. I was really too busy with other activities in school that I preferred doing.

My uncle gave me a zither, which I enjoyed playing. :)

I always wanted to take piano lessons, but parents couldn't afford lessons, let alone buy a piano - even a secondhand one.

Played the flute in high school, and can play the spoons.

I love hearing violins. My o/h has a violin that he learned to play in the 80's in Niagara Falls, with an amateur orchestra called "The Niagara Strings". He hasn't played it in many years. It will go to our daughter one day.

Also like listening to sitar music.
