My childhood toilet

This is a pretty good representation of the toilet in the very first house I can remember living in as a child. We moved to it when I was 2. The toilet was outside, down the back stairs and along a pathway bordered by rose bushes. I don't see the chain that you have to pull to make the toilet flush. Also in our toilet, there was a hook next to the seat on which were skewered torn pieces of newspaper. That was our toilet paper. And now I complain that my indoor bathroom complete with toilet, sink, walk in shower, that is air conditioned, free of bugs, and with hot and cold running water, soft toilet paper and fluffy towels is too small. Wow. :(

Yes those toilets were very common in Scotland when I was growing up... I knew lots of people who had outside toilets, and not only that many in the tenements only had one toilet exactly like that on each landing, and so 4 different flats ( apartments ) had to share.. ..and in those days people had lots of kids.., in the middle of the night, they were scary places.. no lights, and in winter, having to leave the house and use a shared toilet on a dark tenement landing must have been very scary

I was fortunate, never had to use an Outdoor toilet, all our houses where I lived as a child had indoor bathrooms. That said we did have High cistern toilets all through my childhood.. and even now they've come back in fashion and are popular again.. but with a modern look

My Grandma had an outhouse on her farm that I would visit as a child. Had to walk out there in the very early mornings.
It had an odor about it. I was little and it was very rustic!
We had outhouses at our hunter's lodge in Colorado. My late husband had a sign, "Ladies only, men take a whiz outside" on the
indoor bathroom. Joking, of course!

Out houses are generally known to be filthy affairs, and often are, but I've seem private outhouses for people's summer cabins that were squeaky clean and a pleasure to use.

Ah yes, I remember the outside toilet just like the one in the original photo, but ours had tiled walls and floor - and a light.
After a while the council gave grants for installing inside bathrooms.
My current house still has an outside toilet, but I think it was a 'convenience' for when you were working in the garden. I've kept the 'outhouse' as it has a water tap and sink.

Same this way, was very lucky to have an indoor toilet.
