I'm fortunate to live in a city with an excellent dental college - Ohio State University College of Dentistry. I've been thrilled with their services and I've been a patient there for quite a few years. They do accept dental insurance, but their fees are considerably lower than a private dentist.

I haven't needed any repair work in a while, but the last time I had a crown it was $480, and root canal was $470 (this was about 5 yrs ago). They also custom made me a mouth guard which I usually wear at night to help with bruxism (teeth grinding) - it cost $122.

There is an orthodonture clinic and various specialty areas. They make dentures, bridges, partials,, crowns, periodontal (gums), endodontal (root canal), cosmetic dentistry & whitening, fillings, cleaning, dental surgery, etc. All student work is checked by instructors (most of whom are practicing dentists). There is also an emergency clinic.

OSU itself is a "city" - huge campus. The dental school is very high tech.

Appointments can be time consuming, but they are extremely thorough. Today I had a medical review and risk assessment and X-rays. Total cost was $64. My cleaning will be in a month and the cost will be $59.

AND, they always give a "Goody Bag" :) - toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and a couple proxy brushes (good for hard to clean areas between molars).

And they're super nice - students, instructors, cashiers, everyone.

I forgot: Groups of dental students periodically go to elementary schools to give kids a free cleaning and talk to them about dental hygiene.
