I wanted to post a follow up for Nasal Surgeries that I had performed this year.

Hopefully, anyone needing or considering have similar surgeries performed will find it helpful.

This is Link to first Post - when I had the first surgery performed.

Unfortunately, I had to have a second surgery done 3 months after the first.

Following is the write up after the 2nd Surgery

My Experience for Nasal Surgeries

I have had 4 Nasal Surgery Procedures performed over two separate Hospital visits performed this year.

When I went to look for other folks experiences – I was unable to find much to help me understand and prepare for the surgery(s). What little I did find was helpful.

I hope the following will be of some value to anyone who may be in the position of needing to have Nasal Surgery(s) performed.

The Why & Background:

Born in 1959.

Normal childhood, played neighborhood football/sports - and we played rough. Got hit in face a lot and had to get Nose Cauterized a few times as it would not stop bleeding from about age 5 to age 13.

Never thought anything of it – we just played rough as boys did growing up in the South in the 1960’s.

At age 13 I got into Motorcycles and pretty well quit playing ball.

I always had Colds and Stuffy Nose – but I never knew any different for my whole life.

At age 62 I had Heart Atrial Flutter and had a Ablation Surgery done.

As a result of the Heart Flutter & Ablation the Doctors put me on a CPAP machine.

I had trouble breathing good with the CPAP – so went to ENT.

The ENT did the C-Scan and Scope and he told me he was surprised I could breathe much at all. Bone Spurs and old damage – he was quite impressed and called in several of his associates to see the mess – ha !

The Surgeries:

12-Apr-22

Went in 12-Apr-22 and had the following done on both Nostrils

1. Nasal Septoplasty

2. Submucous Resection Turbinate

3. Repair Nasal Vestibular Stenosis

Follow up(s) with ENT required additional surgery for the right side due to scar tissue Ablations.

On 12-Jul-22, had the right Nostril worked on some more

1. Lysis Intranasal Synechia Septal Dermatoplasty

After the 1st Surgery – as is normal I had Packing and Stents in both Nostriils.

Did the Saline Flushing and it not pleasant.

In my case the Stents / Packing were very irritating to me.

On the 3rd night, I sneezed and both Stents and the Packing blew out of my Nose. It was instant relief. My body was rejecting them. The Stents were 3-1/2" long ! I find it hard to believe all that stuff was jammed into my face.... ha ! No wonder my body wanted it out.

The ENT left it all out. Told me to be careful. I was !

Rinsed a lot and very unpleasant slow recovery.

Both Nostrils were very Raw and Sore. They would dry out fast – I’m sure the Saline Rinse contributed to this.

I mixed a few drops of Baby Oil into Vaseline and used a Cue Tip to gently apply to the Nostrils. This would soothe and keep them moist and not dry out as much. I needed to do this for about a week and then it was not needed.

I could breath better. But not as good out of Right Nostril.

Follow Up visits with ENT resulted in 2nd Surgery for the Right Nostril

On 12-Jul-22, had the right Nostril worked on some more

1. Lysis Intranasal Synechia Septal Dermatoplasty

He put in a Stent, Packing a Plastic Flat Brace to support the Nose. Had to keep it in for a week.

Very unpleasant but not as bad as the first surgery.

Removed the Stent/Packing/Brace after one week. What a relief !

I can definitely breath better. I am still rinsing a lot but I am not near as sore as from the first go round.

Flush and Irrigate alot - it keeps things moist.

Consider the Baby Oil / Vaseline if necessary.

Life will be miserable until you get the Stents / Packing out.

I can’t stress enough to Rinse a lot.

In my case, the prescription Codeine Pain Pills caused bad Constipation.

For me, the only way to get relief was to drink a bottle of Magnesium Citrate that we got Over The Counter at Walmart.

It worked and be aware that you may need it if the Pain Killers effect you the same way they did on me.

Summary:

The ENT says this was all caused by all of the Trauma and damage from getting hit in the Nose/Face/Mouth so much as a kid. So if you have taken some hits or been in accidents, etc., and have Sinus issues - you might want to look into having a ENT examine you.

Once I am healed up, the ENT will have another Sleep Study performed and he is optimistic that I may not need to use the CPAP machine any more.

Note that until I am healed I can’t use the CPAP as the nose is way too sore.

I can definitely breath better.

The ENT says I will most likely not have the Sinus issues as all the damage and blockages have been removed.

Was it all worth it and would I do it all over again?

At this point, I’m not sure… But I will be able to better respond to that question in one year from now.

As I said, I can breathe much easier and better – it has made a dramatically noticeable difference in that regards. And that’s a good thing !

I will try to follow up in 2023 with The Rest Of The Story…

Thanks, gamboolman...

Thanks, gamboolman...
You've been through so much! I hope the relief you feel is permanent.

I used to have terrible nose bleeds when I was little. I remember my mother and father passing each other with towels. I wound up having to go to the hospital to have it cauterized. I know it was packed...don't remember if it was the same time or a different time. It's nice of you to share your experiences in such detail to help others who may have to go through the same thing. I hope that surgery was your last G-man.

25-Jul-22 was scheduled follow up visit with the ENT.

That morning my right side that had the 2nd Surgery performed started bleeding - and I mean bleeding. It was a steady stream and kept on for about 3 hours.
I passed out due to the blood loss but ms gamboolgal caught me on the way down. I awoke right quick and we went in early to the ENT.
Went to the ENT and he inserted another long Packing into the Right Side and told to come back in one week.

Extremely unpleasant week.

Went back on 1-Aug-22 and he pulled the Packing out. Still doing the Saline Rinses at least twice per day.

Now have to go back in a couple of weeks for follow up.

I can breathe much better out of both nostrils - it is very obvious to me.

I think in the long run it will be worth it. And I do think most folks will not have to have a 2nd Surgery and a ruhrow like what happened with the bleeding.

Next step after getting healed up good will be to do another Sleep Study and see can I get off the CPAP Machine. The ENT is optimistic that this will happen.
As I said above, I can breathe much easier and better.

Getting off the CPAP Contraption would be a Godsend !

Who would have ever thought boys playing rough ~55 year previous would have caused all this - ha !
