We have two clock radios and he sets mine and his own every evening...to CNN out of habit. In my sleep this morning I heard this headline. We lived in Kissimmee for several years. This just adds yet more unspeakable horror to recent events. You know they won't find that poor child. Just pray they kill that gator or it gets caught before it claims anyone else. How did that happen anyway? Yes there are gators all over the place. They show up in parking lots, private yards, pools...But shouldn't Disney have had safe guards? Life guards? Somebody who would have seen this animal?

Oh and I'm setting my clock to classic rock from now on...

Yeah, I heard about it last night or was it early morning, not sure, I didn't get to sleep till after 5 am. Truly such a very sad heart wrenching ordeal for the family. This of course isn't all that far from the Orlando incident, more tragic news in the general area. Btw, I too used lived in Kissimmee for a few years, I worked for the county, new the area pretty well.

Sad and tragic. Had to watch his child be taken after coming so close to getting him back. He'll never live that down.

Isn't late spring/early summer mating season for alligators in Florida. I thought that increases their activity including coming close to shore. I thought they told people always to keep an eye on pets & children and/or put leave them in a secure location at home. Always heard sharks do most of their attacks in shallow water as well. In some respects it makes sense from the alligators stand point because as far as they were concerned they were taking prey getting a drink of water or something.

I still feel it's Disney's full responsibility to keep their water areas safe by any means needed. A rogue gator or shark shouldn't be able to get in...gates, nets, shock fencing from the water bed up to high enough nothing can crawl or jump around it. That poor family must be in grief we can't imagine. You plan a family vacation with your baby only to return home alone. All the lawsuits in creation won't bring back your child.

I'm surprised that this kind of tragedy hasn't happened before. Between the Alligators, and the Burmese Pythons, Florida is a rather dangerous place for small children...anywhere near a body of water, or near any ground cover. One of the news articles today said that this Disney complex borders a large nature preserve with large amounts of habitat well suited for alligators. It would appear that a simple "no swimming" sign is hardly warning enough to the tourists about the potential dangers. But, then, this is one of the premier Disney resorts with prices starting at almost $600 a night...so the hotel management probably doesn't want to "scare" the high rollers away. I would think this hotel must bear some responsibility, And anyone with small children who are planning a Florida vacation should probably seek a more "civilized" environment for their trip.

There are also some pretty strict Florida laws protecting the Alligators, so any attempts by the resort owners to "manage" their populations would probably violate some State laws. I imagine there will be some changes made at these kinds of resorts, and far better warnings posted for the tourists who are unfamiliar with these surroundings. Like anything else, a crisis has to occur before any progress is made.

Tragic? Yes. Horrible? Yes.

Stupid? Surely. Tragic and horrible that such nincompoops can breed but not parent.

What nitwit takes his children wading in a lagoon? I mean, why would he do that?

And then on another thread we're asked if we believe in abortion.

Good grief. Priorities, priorities. It's convenient to abort a baby, but horrible to have one taken by an alligator in the alligator's lagoon. Guess it's OK to destroy a child when it's by the parent's choice?
 
The toddlers body was found today. They said on the news the toddler drowned, but the body was intact. Found only 15 yards, I think they said, from where the gator snatched him.

What a sad, sad situation.
 
Guitarist...<<<deep sigh>>>...are you a parent? I'm not being a wise butt...It's a horrendous tragedy and terrible accidents happen...really...don't even go there.

It was a "no swimming" sign. Not a 'no wading' or 'stay out' of the water sign. They needed alligator warning signs. Locals are aware of the alligators but not tourists.

The dad had enough of an eye on him to fight the alligator for a brief amount of time which means he was seconds a way.

This being an artificial body of water on private property makes Disney liable as far as I am concerned. Won't bring the child back though. People should always be aware of nature where ever they go.

Also some have pointed out that Disney goes out of it's way to create the illusion of fantasy and that the visitors are in another world where only happy things happen. If they put DANGER-alligators that would take away from that fantasy and business.
 
I don't think it necessary to point out the obvious... but please... why pour salt in the horrific wound of these parents? Don't you think this will haunt them for the rest of their lives? Can you imagine the enormous guilt they will carry and how they will relive this tragedy forever? I have a very close friend who lost a two year old due to a momentary lapse in her judgement.. that was 40 years ago and it still haunts her.. She went on to have more children but you can never replace THAT child. This is so very sad..

Well now that everyone knows there are real live gators they can't carry on that façade anymore. Definitely heavy fencing and even if they want to use cartoons...signs spelling out exactly to stay away from the water and don't feed the wildlife...in at least five or six languages.
