My mom was just summoned for jury duty

Where I live, once you're 70 or older, you can be excused for medical reasons and don't have to prove it either or even specify what the medical problems are. (Under 70, you have to provide a letter from a medical professional.)
That's the way it is here.
I was summoned to serve at the beginning of this month for two weeks. Call in on Friday and see if you need to come in the following week. Both Fridays I got a text telling me I didn't need to come in. Needless to say I was not disappointed.

I was summoned for duty on a coroner's jury once. There were supposed to be penalties for not attending. In the end, my OH and I decided that, as the letter had arrived by normal post (ie had not needed to be signed for as proof of receipt) we could, if asked, deny all knowledge of it. So I ignored the letter, the due date passed...

And there were absolutely no consequences :)

I got a number of jury summons over the years, went twice but never chosen. I had to make a lot of excuses to get out of showing, for business reasons. I used to hate being called, I didn't have the time. Now that I'm retired I'd be happy to do it, but no longer seem to get called...

Got one in the mail just last week .(again) ........ over 70 in Texas will excuse you from jury duty, but different court systems here seem to be independent of each other, and don't share information, so I expect to hear from them again.

I don't drive much, and I certainly would never/couldn't drive into downtown Houston anymore. Most courts are in the city.
Just the thought of getting on any of our freeways scares me.

I no longer get called for duty. About 8 years back I would get called up every few years but the cases were always settled before the day of duty. Maybe it is because I now do a bible Study at the county jail?

just got the notice 3 days before scheduled...insane ...for old people to have to trudge to courthouse...make it thru God knows who in the parking areas on court days...geez

I've only had two notices to serve on jury duty. One when my kids were too small, and they didn't need me. The other was a grand jury, but didn't need to attend as the case was settled out of court. The fact that I worked in law enforcement for 10 years may have been a detriment to be picked also.
I would like to serve once at least. I guess my time has passed.

Yes, in our town you can get off the hook at 70. My past experience? There are people who are dying to get selected: they always give the perfect answers in jury selection, whether true or not. On the other end, there are people who hate it and give always wrong answers, like being very prejudiced and already have made up their mind about everything. In my experience, jury selection is a game show and a joke.

Yes, I‘ll be 72 next month and recently got a jury summons. I live in California and got out of it forever by calling and and telling them my age and all the reasons I can’t be on jury duty (they didn’t care)
I was excused and didnt need a drs note.

I would love to be on a jury in a famous trial though and in all honesty would try and answer in a way that I’d get picked.

I recently got a jury summons. As much as I would have liked to be on a jury when I was younger, I decided at my age, there are too many … um … issues and variables, so I pleaded age (70+) and asked to be removed from the list.

If there is a contact number, call them to confirm she needs to come at her age. You may need her with you to confirm they can speak with you
