My new obsession: Reaction Videos

I don't know why, but lately I have been enjoying "reaction videos" on YouTube.

This usually involves a young person -- often, but not always, a young Black person -- listening and reacting to some piece of music that "we" (old white people) all know but that they are hearing for the first time.

One young man named Jamal is very endearing, and his comments are usually pretty insightful. He seems to like Gordon Lightfoot, Yes, and the Grateful Dead.

Check one out -- just Google "Jamal reaction videos" or "twins the new thing". There are hundreds of them.

I have recently seen a few. It's nice to watch someone displaying pleasure and/or surprise at various types of music. I like those twins.

Awhile back I was watching the lovely Afghan villagers on Reactistan reacting to Western foods. All subtitles. Pretty funny and interesting.
 

I dig reaction videos, too. I especially like this 19 year old British kid (Lavishreacts) reacting to American sports videos, a real eye-opening experience for him. He's also reacted to several American tornado videos...totally blew him away.

was thinking the same thing. wondering HOW some of the reaction pieces could even happen. Jamal ain't no tween/teen. i don't know his age, but i do NOT believe someone who got to full-beard age had never heard classic Skynyrd... fake news, i suspect.

Well, I made it to the age of 65 without ever having heard "Funky Cold Medina." However I get your point. Jamal is 40, I think. Sometimes when he starts up a song he then says "Oh, yeah, I've heard that in a movie" or "so and so sampled this song".

Not sure I would call it fake news though I can't believe that anyone, no matter how old, has never heard "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Stairway to Heaven."

By the way, I have never heard "W.A.P." and with luck I never will.

MANY of these "reactors" go way over-board on the drama queen/king stuff... imnsho! ;)

one of those lewd/rude/crude songs became background music for wholesome Kit Kat bars!?! something by Missy Elliot. and think that Elvis' swiveling hips and the Rolling Stones "Let's Spend the Night Together" was scandalous!

Wow, I have been subscribed to JamelAKAJamal for about a year now. I do find his videos very entertaining. The others not as much. But Jamel really does seem down to earth and sincere,

Yes, he is the kind of guy you would like to have as a next door neighbor.
 
I absolutely love these twins, especially the one on the left who makes the "stank face" when something gets good to him! I happened on them when YT was autoplaying videos. They are hilarious and truly love all genres of music apparently. I get a big smile whenever I watch them. :D So this became my new thing too about two months ago. I haven't watched all their videos yet but have subscribed to their channel. Saturday Night Live did a funny skit about them. Even President Obama is a fan and surprised them one day. They haven't heard lots of stuff because they are only 22 years old. Their videos are monetized and have gotten millions of views so they are getting paid. Here they react to Phil Collins In The Air. I haven't watched any of the other reaction video people.
 
if their reactions had not been like ones at the 5:00 mark (that drum combo, or whatever musicians would call it), they'd lose all credibility
