My phone is from another time in history.

Rick,
i too own a flip phone. I have considered upgrading, however, I have no need at this point. I take it when I go out, I have Onstar in my car, iPad and a smart TV. I don't go that far or that long in the car so if I can't be reached by phone ( I give my cell phone number only to my son and family) a message can be left on my home phone. So, I consider my own personal needs first! It is also smaller than any of the smart phones I have seen so I like that feature. Embarrassed? Not I.

Consumer Cellular is my flip phone provider. I tried to see about a new phone. I'm completely confused. I found out that iOS 10 is "Big. Bold. Beautiful". But iOS9 is "The most advanced mobile experience". One phone costs $50. Another phone, well, you can "arrange for monthly payments". This is just what I didn't want- being so far out of the loop.

I often take the train or bus or walk. The GPS on my phone is very helpful.

Ditto that, it's one of the reasons I drag my phone with me, otherwise, I could care less about the calling part except for emergencies. The more the world changes and some other things become available or make life more convenient in some way my android has it's uses, like I said before, I use Uber, the earlier models you can't access Uber or other car services without it and those services save me nearly 50% of what regular cab services cost if I were to want to try to call them.

I hope we all can realize it isn't a one size fits all, it's not an us against them, I'm better because I'm using more modern tech or not using it. None really should have to feel apologetic/boastful one way or the other as it often seems these types of threads culminate to. Some of us get great use out of some new technology, not a reflection on how we feel about those who stay with the old, there's always someone who might come along and feel landline rotaries phones are as much as one needs and why are people even using a forum as a form of expressing their thoughts when they have perfectly good neighbors to disturb with their thoughts. :D

This dang interweb, the bane of what itches my a:D, I mean what ails me.

I deal with Consumer Cellular too. I'm not about to pay more per mo. for a phone I rarely use. Some of those phones, if I am not mistaken, are monthly charges for that particular phone for purchase. Then you have your regular bill. If you have need for a new one, maybe you can call and talk to someone--they have been easy to talk to as far as I am concerned however I have heard some negative comments.

I don't think anyone was boasting - I wasn't. I just like to share what I can do with my phone that I find very helpful that regular phone users might not be aware of.

Thats what happened to us, Carla. Kept building up minutes, but running out of time. A waste of money.

I guess I'll swallow my pride and live with a dorky phone. It's tough watching technology pass you by.

I would like to switch our service and get a new smarter than me phone but we can't because we have 3 phones with our daughter and she would be charged a huge amount of $$$$$ to cancel them!!!!

I use T-Mobile and have a pay as you go and have NO monthly charges at all. Just buy minutes as I need them; bought the phone outright from T-mobile. I've done the same thing or years (had two earlier phones) and it's the best way to go, IMO, unless you use the phone a lot. I don't, and I don't use it for internet stuff, though it has the capability. In 2016 I think I used a grand total of $25 in minutes and NO monthly charges.

It wasn't too far in the past that the phone we had was like the one in this picture- approximately the same color, too- rotary phone, wired into the wall. Considering its original owners, I think it was older than me.
I never saw a cell phone til 2002, and didn't buy one til 2009.
Preferred phones with QWERTY, but as they're impossible to find I bought an LG touch-screen recently through Amazon- $8.95 minus a $3 gift code, and free shipping.
The way I see it: I use cell phone primarily for texting, rarely calls, and appreciate the camera feature. But for everything else, I prefer to use my computer.
Nothing against "tech," I just have no interest in every newfangled gadget that comes out. phone.jpg
